Local Sports: Monroe's baseball team scores 21 runs in three innings

Monroe's baseball team needed just three innings to pound winless Ypsilanti 21-0 in the opening game of the Division 1 District Monroe is hosting.

Carson Liedel led the onslaught, ripping a triple and two doubles to drive in three runs.

Noah Miller added two hits and two RBI while Logan Loveland and Drew Scznsny each drove in a pair of runs. The Trojans were helped by 12 walks.

Liedel and Kellen Roberts logged eight of the nine outs via strikeouts.

Monroe moves on to play Belleville at 10 a.m. Saturday. The second semifinal game will feature Bedford and Ypsilanti Lincoln.

Big inning lifts Vikings

DUNDEE – Dundee scored all of its runs in the fourth inning to top Flat Rock 4-1 Tuesday.

Matt Atkinson led the way, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Drew Bolster, Ethan Layton, and Evan Imo combined on a four-hitter.

Joey Godfrey drove in Flat Rock’s run.

Airport cruises

CARLETON – An RBI single by Drew VanWasshenova followed by a two-run single by Jordan Footlander got Airport rolling toward a 12-2 win over Whitmore Lake Tuesday.

Cooper Nye went 2-for-3 for the 29-4 Jets.

Callahan goes deep

NEW BOSTON – A home run by Rory Callahan was the highlight for New Boston Huron in a 5-2 victory over Detroit Public Safety Tuesday.

Callahan, Gavin Moczydlowski, and Kyle Kantola logged two hits each for Huron. Luke Coll pitched well.

Milan earns split

MILAN – Milan came back from a 5-0 loss in the first game to beat Dearborn Heights Annapolis 7-4 in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday.

Connor Dessellier notched three hits and two RBI to lead the offense. Holden Gates earned the win with Jaxon Morawski picking up a save for 18-12 Milan.

SMCC salvages tie

Drew Bylow singled home a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give St. Mary Catholic Central a 5-5 tie with Linden Tuesday.

The Falcons dropped the first game 9-5.

Bylow had two hits in the second game along with Anthony Caladino and Tommy Rogoff.

Brennen Runyon was 2-for-2 in the first game.

Bears overpowered

PINCKNEY – Pinckney had too much offense for Jefferson Tuesday, sweeping a doubleheader 9-2 and 11-1.

Jase Johns led the Bears with three hits.

Carlson’s season ends

WOODHAVEN – Woodhaven scored nine runs in the opening inning and rolled to an 11-1 win over Gibraltar Carlson in a Division 1 District game Tuesday.

Addison Butt had two of the six hits for the Marauders, who finished with a 13-12 record in their first year under Jason Gyolai.

Woodhaven will play Ypsilanti Lincoln in the semifinals of the District at Monroe Saturday. Bedford and Monroe will battle in the first game at 10 a.m.

Big game for Daniels

MILAN – Leila Daniels drove in eight runs with a double and two home runs to lead Milan to a 16-0 rout of Tecumseh in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday.

Virginia Heikka also collected three hits and Tierra Ronayne, Madison Gray, and Madalyn Spencer added two each to support the three-hit pitching of Mariah Stines.

Tecumseh took the second game 10-5 despite two hits by Daniels and three RBI by Gray.

Doane sharp for Dundee

HOMER – Lauren Doane tossed a one-hit shutout in the first game and Dundee went on to sweep Homer 12-0 and 10-3 Tuesday.

Kennedy Irwin, Natalie Rath, and Kiernan Brown led the attack on offense and defense and Kaylee Imo earned the win in the second game for the 24-10 Vikings.

Trenton tops Bears

Rylie Dunn and Julia Perry logged two hits each, but Jefferson fell 10-3 to Trenton Tuesday.

Saline shuts down Huron

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron managed just seven hits and was swept 2-0, 6-0 by Saline Tuesday.

Marissa Jackson finished with three hits. She went 2-for-3 and Rylie Greggo pitched well in the first game. Emma Sic had a hit in each game.

PREP GOLF

Carlson makes state

TAYLOR – Gibraltar Carlson earned a trip to the Division 2 state finals by shooting a round of 318 to take third place in the Regional at Lakes of Taylor Golf Club Tuesday.

Chelsea won the Regional with 303 and Tecumseh was second with 317.

Jase Marcott led the Marauders with 76, Landon Kongeal shot 77, Zackary Sisk 82, and Hagan Smith 83.

New Boston Huron’s Nicholas Kosiba qualified individually for state with 76. His team took sixth place with 325 as Marco Tylutki carded 77 and Tyler Toth 81.

Max Jenness shot 80 for Milan and Jake Trythall 90 for Airport.

Rogier comes close

ADRIAN – Laran Rogier of Flat Rock was three strokes away from qualifying for the state finals by shooting a round of 83 in the Division 3 Regional at The Hills of Lenawee Golf Club Tuesday.

That was the best score for any Monroe County Region golfers.

Teammates Mitchell Smith (86) and Bryce Elliott (89) also were under 90 as the Rams shot 353 to finish in seventh place, one behind St. Mary Catholic Central with 352.

Drew Vuich and Mathis Lymond led the Falcons with 84.

Low scores for the other Region schools were Carter Bahn of Dundee 90, Zackary Bailey of Ida 94, and Ben Peer of Jefferson 106.

TRACK AND FIELD

Simmons wins discus

DEXTER – Monroe’s Teegan Simmons won the discus and Brayden Richard placed sixth at the Larry Steeb Meet of Champions Tuesday.
