Local Sports: Milan swimmers top Dundee; big win for State Line soccer

MILAN – Dundee was supposed to host Milan and Ypsilanti Lincoln for a swimming meet Tuesday.

The event was shifted to Milan because of a pool issue at Dundee.

The home water treated Milan well as the Big Reds beat Dundee 114-69 and Lincoln 138-39.

“We won 10 of the 12 events, put up a state cut in the 200 Free Relay and had several lifetime bests on the night,” Milan coach Dan Heikka said.

Mary Kate Wayne (individual medley, breaststroke) and Kiera Luhrs (50-yard freestyle, butterfly) both won a pair of individual events.

Other winners were Lila McKenna (200), Kaylin Brown (diving), Kam Stripp (100) and Sara Mitchel (backstroke).

Other standouts were Laila Nemeth, Haylie Dunn, Peyton Bergstrom, Tamelah Hamilton, Lily Rader, Emma Brown, Tori Kimberly, Bri Pumfrey, Megan McChesney, Hannah Brady, Sarah Monroe, Hallie Thornton, Micheala Vrazdova and Joanna Wikerson

Dundee, which beat Lincoln 125-52, hit a state-qualifying time in the 200 freestyle relay with Joslyn Ball, Sara Carter, Lily Ratliff and Kaylee Imo and a Michigan Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association qualifying time in the 400 relay with Kaylee Desbrough, Imo, Brook Hester and Ball.

Trio powers Flat Rock

TAYLOR – Sisters Lauren and Aileen McNamara and Riley Chevalier all won a pair of and swam on two winning relays to lead Flat Rock to a 96-78 win over New Boston Huron-Taylor Tuesday.

Lauren McNamara took the 50 and 500-yard freestyles, Aileen McNamara the 200 and the breaststroke and Chevalier the individual medley and butterfly.

The Rams also got wins from Felicia Morrison (diving), Sophia Chan (100 freestyle and Ashlin Woodman (backstroke).

Dundee tripped

CLINTON – Lola Salenbien recorded 17 digs and Kennedy Irwin 8 kills for Dundee in a 25-22, 25-13, 25-24 loss to Clinton Tuesday.

Milan’s Slack shines

MILAN – Madison Slack enjoyed a big night with 29 kills and 15 digs for Milan in a 25-7, 25-18, 25-15 win over Jefferson Monday.

Malea Wourman added 18 kills and 5 digs and Courtney Nye 12 kills and 9 digs. Olivia Henry, Mariah Stines and Aubree Higgins also played well.

Monroe earns a tie

SALINE – Vishwas Joshi scored off a Brian Palmer assist for the only goal of the night as Monroe pulled out a 1-1 tie with Saline Tuesday.

It was the completion of a match that was halted by weather two weeks ago with Saline leading 1-0.

“It might say 1-1 on the scoreboard but it feels like our guys just beat the No. 9-ranked D1 team D1 the state,” Monroe coach Ian Cooke said. “With every game this group just continues to enhance the reputation of our soccer program around the state.”

Ethan Merkle was outstanding in goal and Jovanny Gallegos and Talen Swinkey played well in the midfield for 9-4-2 Monroe.

Braithwaite nets winner

TEMPERANCE – Derek Braithwaite’s 14th goal of the season provided the winning margin as State Line Christian shaded Bloomfield Christian 2-1 Tuesday.

The Patriots (7-7) avenged a 10-2 loss earlier in the season.

“As a coach, I want to win every game we are supposed win and a few we aren't supposed to win,” State Line coach Andy Yglesias said. “This was a game we weren't supposed to win.”

Brandt Dyer had the first State Line goal off an assist from JR Hobbins.

CROSS COUNTRY

Mason sweeps titles

SAND CREEK – Erie Mason’s boys and girls both won titles in the second Tri-County Conference jamboree of the season Tuesday.

The girls scored 48 points to top runner-up Whiteford by 14. The boys had 50 to 66 for Morenci.

Bailey Meiring (fourth), Elizabeth Meiring (fifth), Lexi Colburn (11th), Mikaela Graves (12th) and Riley England (16th­) led the girls. The boys had Austin Sulier, Parker Campbell, Colin Parent, Jackson Carner and Brayden Hincher finish 2-4-11-14-19.

Whiteford’s Keegan Masters was the boy’s winner in 17:02.5. Zach Kahn was 12th and Brendon Masters 20th as the Bobcats finished fourth in the team standings. Shaun Cowen led Summerfield in 21st.

Whiteford girls were led by Braelynn Chiotti (third), Annabelle Gapp (eighth), Emily Rasor (ninth), Jillian Webb (20th) and Reagan Wing (22nd). Grace Raymond and Faith Secor ran 13-15 for Summerfield.

Trinity’s Dowen wins

MONROE – Ava Dowen won the sixth-grade girls race for Trinity Lutheran at the recent Jefferson Invitational.

Kelsie Sikes, Delanie Sikes, Amelia Murphy, Karis Beaton, Cole Butler, Evan Dowen, Gavin Rohr, Charity Frank-DeRoch, Emma Boyd and Hannah Finley also won medals for Trinity.

JUNIOR VARSITY SOCCER

Ida tops Monroe

IDA –Brandon Commet (2 goals), Dane Holycross (goal, assist) and Cameron Tross (2 assists) led Ida to a 3-2 win over Monroe Tuesday.
