Local Sports: Bedford volleyball, SMCC soccer, cross country win titles

WILLIS – Another weekend, another title for Bedford’s volleyball team.

The Mules captured their third tournament championship of the season Saturday, rolling to the title in the Ypsilanti Lincoln Invitational.

Bedford rode a devastating front line to the crown.

Victoria Gray led the hitters with 36 kills, 26 digs and 9 blocks. Alivia Brown (30 digs, 14 kills, 13 aces), Jaelyn Hall (22 kills, 11 blocks), Macy Madalynski (21 kills) and Kadie Morse (18 kills 5 blocks) also were outstanding.

Local Sports: Mason sweeps jamborees; Monroe volleyball wins

Kaelyn Schroeder delivered 105 assists and 31 digs, and Mya Krohn had 38 digs and 9 aces.

Bedford beat New Boston Huron in the semifinals and Tecumseh 25-17,25-12 in the finals to run its record to 30-1.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

SMCC finishes 2-2

PONTIAC – St. Mary Catholic Central beat Novi and Utica Eisenhower and lost to Northville and North Branch Saturday on Day 2 of the Power League Tournament.

The 15-4-1 Falcons were led by McKenna Payne (62 assists, 32 digs, 11 kills), Jessica Costlow (23 kills, 37 digs, 4 blocks), Madline Dettling (29 kills), Alexa Turner (30 assists), Jillian Anderson (7 blocks), Olivia Beaudrie (36 digs, 5 aces), Analiese Flint (12 kills), Molly Blanchett (11 kills), and Ashley Ruhlig (36 digs).

SMCC takes title

MONROE – St. Mary Catholic Central beat Tecumseh 4-1 and Bedford 1-0 Saturday to win its own Rosenbrook Invitational.

Holden Kennedy recorded two goals and two assists against Tecumseh and assisted on Jacob St. Pierre’s goal against Bedford.

St. Pierre also had a goal and an assist against Tecumseh. Alex Popadich also had a goal and Caleb Hendrix was credited with an assist.

Trent Zachel recorded his second shutout of the season.

“We really needed these two games today,” SMCC coach Nathan Olson said of his 6-6 team. “We have been in a scoring funk the last three games. I challenged the team to put the past week out of our mind and to really focus on playing the basic passes and shots.”

Bedford beat Tecumseh 2-0.

Monroe stops Pirates

MONROE – Jovanny Gallegos scored twice and Vishwas Joshi and Yuma Watanabe had the other goals as Monroe came from behind to top state-ranked Riverview 4-2 Saturday.

Assists went to Gallegos, Joshi, Talen Swinkey and Luis Diaz.

“We had our hands full with two very quick and dangerous forwards, but we decided not to change it up at halftime but to trust in our system and formation,” Monroe coach Ian Cooke said. “We found our rhythm in the second half and went up through the gears.”

State Line falls in finals

TEMPERANCE – State Line Christian (4-6) fell 3-0 to undefeated Hammond Baptist of Indiana in the finals of its own Patriot Invitational Saturday.

Senior Derek Braithwaite scored four goals in three games to lead the State Line offense. He was joined on the all-tournament team by juniors Cooper Worley and Ethan Rains.

PREP SWIMMING

Ball wins three

BELLEVILLE – Joslyn Ball won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and swam a leg on the winning medley relay for Dundee in Saturday’s Belleville Invitational.

Lily Ratliff (backstroke) and Kaylee Imo (breaststroke) also won events. Ratliff, Imo and Sara Carter also swam on the medley relay.

The Vikings had 31 personal-best times.

PREP CROSS COUNTRY

Huron crowned

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron’s boys and St. Mary Catholic Central’s girls captured the Division 2 championships in Saturday’s Huron Invitational.

SMCC’s girls were dominant, scoring 40 points to finish well ahead of New Boston Huron’s 97.

Bella LaFountain was the runner-up individually. Teammates Claire Lisker, Samantha LaFountain, Juleigh Husby and Leona Knudsen ran 6-10-14-17.

Mason Relays: Airport's Bovair goes from carried out to carrying off first-place medal

Megan Woelkers of Flat Rock was third, Avery Turk and Falyn Doss of Huron fourth and seventh, Courtney Bovair of Airport fifth and Kaylee Hovey of Dundee eighth.

Other Region runners in the top 20 were Katelyn Bydlowski and Julia Hughes of Ida, Bailed Meiring and Elizabeth Lambert of Erie Mason, Kayla Christesen of Huron and Kennedy Childress of the Monroe Milers.

Huron’s boys scored 66 points to finish 16 ahead of runner-up SMCC.

Huron ran 3-5-8-20-30 with Lucas Kuhn, Luke Dulecki, Abdul Ghennewa, Kyle Biller and Cameron Crane.

Flat Rock, which took third place with 84 points, had three of the top seven runners with Jacob Stanislawski (second), Nathan Vargo (sixth) and Lucas Taraszkiewicz (seventh).

Simon VanderVlucht (ninth), Max Foldvary (12th), Henry Wickenheiser (17th) and Chase Missler (18th) led SMCC.

Isaak Rubley ran fourth for Dundee, Callen Bell 10th and William Dobbertin 15th for Airport, Parker Campbell, Austin Sulier, Jackson Carner, Collin Parent 11-14-19-21 for Erie Mason and Dylan Tengler 13th for Ida.

Monroe’s Andrew Foshag took third in the Division 1 boys race, and Nathan Lawe of Gibraltar Carlson was 20th. Viktoria Bloniarz of Monroe (12th) and Reagan Reaume of Carlson (21st) were the Region’s top finishers in the Division 1 girls race.

Pilachowski takes fifth

EAST LANSING – Jefferson’s Jenna Pilachowski took fifth in the girls race to highlight the performance by Monroe County Region teams in the Spartan Invitational Friday.

Will Steinhour led Jefferson’s boys.

Keegan Masters, Zach Kahn and Braelynn Chio Hi were the top runners for Whiteford.
