Local Sports: Bedford volleyball brings home title in Cereal City event

BATTLE CREEK – Bedford’s volleyball team is waiting to hear the fate of head coach Jodi Manore, but they refused to be distracted Saturday.

The Mules ran their record to 12-0 by winning six straight matches to win the Battle Creek Cereal City Tournament.

They topped Battle Creek Lakeview in the finals.

Victoria Gray racked up 35 kills, Alivia Brown 23, Jaelyn Hall 19 and Macy Madalinski 18. Kaylin Schroeder recorded 82 assists.

The defense was balanced as Mya Krohn notched 30 digs, Brown 24 and Gray 20.

Bree Russow is serving as interim coach with Manore on temporary leave while the school completes an investigation.

Milan is runner-up

RIVERVIEW – Milan fell just 2 points shy of champion Wyandotte Roosevelt in Saturday's Rockin' Relays.

Milan won six of the 11 events and was second in five others. Wins came in the medley (Krista Cook, Mary Kate Wayne, Kam Stripp, Laila Nemeth), 300 individual medley (Sara Mitchell, Wayne, Stripp), 200 breaststroke-butterfly (Mitchell, Kiera Luhrs, Wayne, Stripp), 500 freestyle (Sarah Monroe, Megan McChessney, Annabelle Wiliams, Luhrs, Krista Cook), 400 fusion (Wayne, Williams) and 200 under/over (Luhrs, Stripp, Lila Mckenna, Mitchell) relays.

"It was a great effort by the girls today, but the depth of Wyandotte won out," Milan coach Dan Heikka said.

Flat Rock, which finished in seventh place, won the 200 swim-kick relay with Lauren McNamara, Riley Chevalier, Aileen McNamara, and Sophia Chan.

Monroe's Swinkey excels

MONROE – Talen Swinkey took advantage of a position change to rack up three goals and an assist in a win over Trenton Friday.

“We lost striker Brian Palmer in the first half so we moved Talen Swinkey into a more advanced role in the second half and it paid dividends for us," Monroe coach Ian Cooke said.

Vishwas Joshi and Jovanny Gallegos had the other goals and Joshi and Bryson Lane were credited with assists.

Higgins leads Milan

MILAN – Carter Higgins piled up three goals and three assists to lead Milan to an 8-0 romp over Pinckney Friday.

Caleb Klein added two goals, and Noah Bussell, Wesley Murphy, and Alex LaPlant also scored goals. Additional assists were also credited to Bussell and Nolan Matley.

Milan's junior varsity got a goal from Braeden Lerette in a 3-1 loss to Ida.

CROSS COUNTY

Masters sets record

ADDISON – Whiteford's Keegan Masters got his season off to a great start, running a school-record time of 16:16 to take first place in the Addison Invitational Friday.

Zach Kahn placed 14th as the Bobcat boys finished in eighth place.

Whiteford's girls were fourth led by Braelynn Chiotti (11th), Annie Gapp (18th) and Emily Rasor (19th).

"It was a solid day for our first race," Whiteford coach Jay Yockey said. "We have work to do and room to improve."

Erie Mason was third in the girls race with Bailey Meiring (sixth) and Elizabeth Lambert (16th) leading the way. Austin Sulier (fourth) and Parker Campbell (seventh) led the boys to fourth as a team.

PREP TENNIS

Duran is champ

TRENTON − Monroe's Azariah Duran won all three of his matches to win the championship of the Trenton Open at No. 1 singles Saturday.

Monroe finished with 8 points and Airport 2. Wyandotte Roosevelt and Trenton tied for the title with 18.
