Local Sports: Airport soccer shines; Whiteford nips arch-rival

CANTON – Airport’s boys soccer continued to make last year a distant memory in a 5-2 win over Canton Prep Thursday.

The Jets now stand at 12-3-1. That’s five more wins than last year and four more than the previous school record of 8.

They have poured in 75 goals in the first 16 games, far better than last year’s total of 31.

"We continue to improve and get better as a team,” Airport coach Goran Cepo said. “As coaches, we understand they will make mistakes. The key is to learn from the mistakes which we continue to do. Beyond proud of the improvement this group has made".

Isaiah Chapdelaine led the way Thursday with three goals.

High School Football: Monroe scores 41 points in second quarter, routs Skyline 58-0

Corbin Derry scored his first goal of the season and Nolan Ortega had the other tally for the Jets.

Nolan Sanders was credited with a trio of assists, giving him 22 on the season to go along with his 25 goals.

PREP SOCCER

Trio leads Flat Rock

FLAT ROCK – Brady McBride, Mitchell Smith and Raegan Engelbert each notched two goals and an assist as Flat Rock rolled over Blissfield 8-0 Thursday.

Other goals came from Mitchell Hoagland and David Knezovich.

Blue Streaks tied up

ADRIAN – Grantham Nelson, Jaxon Bolster, Weston Allen and Brandon Commet scored for Ida Thursday in a 4-4 tie with Lenawee Christian.

Allen, Grantham Dane Holycross and Asher Hamm had assists.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Whiteford nips rival

PETERSBURG – Whiteford needed five sets to pull out a win over arch-rival Summerfield 25-19, 25-17, 24-26, 25-27, 15-12 Thursday.

Annabelle Gapp (12 kills, 3 blocks) led the hitters while Alaina McClain, Bailey Spradling, and Karlei Conard finished with 11 kills each. Liv Ruehle (29 digs) and Bailey Spradling (18 digs) led the defense and Anna Schober contributed 32 assists.

Faith Secor had a big night for Summerfield with 10 points, 2 aces, 7 kills, 7 digs and 7 blocks. Jaeli Jones (16 kills, 8 blocks), Mia Samples (8 points, 2 aces, 4 kills, 13 digs) and Ava Fisher (19 digs) also stood out.

Whiteford won the junior varsity match 25-23, 25-16, 15-7.

Dundee tops Mason

ERIE – Kennedy Irwin (16 kills, 5 aces), Briley Bordine (23 digs), Lola Salenbien (30 assists) and Ella Fowler (3 blocks) led Dundee to a 24-26, 25-15, 25-17, 27-25 victory over Erie Mason Thursday.

Eagles get first win

ERIE – Riley Jacobs and Summer Smith each won individual events and swam with Ellie Crawford and Mia Balcerzak on the winning medley relay as Erie Mason-Ida nipped Tecumseh 81-80 Thursday for its first win of the season.

Jessica Lay, Taylor Collyer, Rylee Shaffer, Alexis Etue, Sydney LaVoy; Potter, Rylee Shaffer, Gracie Dean, Natalie Lewis, Sidney Roderick, Taylor Collyer, Alli Ellis and Lexi Globensky also won key points.

Flat Rock wins twice

BELLEVILLE – Riley Chevalier (50-yard freestyle, breaststroke), Lauren McNamara (200, butterfly) and Aileen McNamara (individual medley, backstroke) all were double winners as Flat Rock beat Belleville and Wayne Memorial Thursday.

Other standouts were Sophia Chan, Ashlin Woodman, Carolina Garcia, Elizabeth Sparks, Kyle Balogh and Grace Sturgeon.

Monroe faces top team

ANN ARBOR – Ann Arbor Pioneer showed why it is the top-ranked team in Division 1 with a 152-30 win over Monroe Thursday.

Sophia Smith recorded personal-best times in the individual medley and breaststroke for Monroe. Abby Dieckmann, Phoebe Lietaert and Kate Rolinski also swam well.

Duran earns win

SALINE – Azariah Duran won at No. 1 singles for Monroe's only point in a 7-1 loss to Saline Thursday.

Bedford blanked

TEMPERANCE – Bedford got a strong performance from Jaxon Nejedlik at No. 1 singles in an 8-0 loss to Ann Arbor Pioneer Thursday.

RESERVE FOOTBALL

Two TDs for Snavely

ANN ARBOR – Keoni Snavely scored two touchdowns and Brendan Bacon, Malakhi Threatt and Desmin Williams added one each as Monroe evened its record at 2-2 with a 38-0 rout of Ann Arbor Skyline Thursday night.

Shane McDonald, Xzander McCoy and Davian Davis led the defense.
