LOCAL ROUNDUP: Wheatmore hires Sheffield as football coach

Mar. 4—TRINITY — Jacob Sheffield has been named the varsity football head coach at Wheatmore, the school announced late last week.

Sheffield comes to the school following a season at rival Trinity, where he was the associate head coach, run game coordinate and special teams coordinator under Jason Bear Bradley. The Bulldogs went 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the PAC 1A/2A last season.

Previously, Sheffield was the head coach at High Point Central. He was hired right at the start of the pandemic in the spring of 2020. In three seasons, he led the Bison to seven wins — including a four-win season in 2021 and a pair of wins over rival T.W. Andrews.

Sheffield, who graduated from Trinity in 2005, was also an assistant coach at Page before his tenure at Central. He replaces Philip Yarbrough, who has coached the Warriors the last seven seasons — highlighted by 34 wins that includes 12 wins and a trip to the third round of the playoffs in 2018.
