LOCAL ROUNDUP: Trinity boys down Providence Grove in SportsTone tourney

Dec. 29—ASHEBORO — Trinity turned back Providence Grove 66-53 on Friday in the SportsTone.net Christmas Invitational boys tournament at Asheboro High. The Bulldogs improved to 9-5.

CPLA, RAGSDALE

GREENSBORO — College Prep and Leadership Academy's boys held on to defeat Ragsdale 49-47 in the Phenom Hoops Holiday Showcase on Friday at Smith High.

The Royals led 37-31 heading into the final quarter as they improved to 6-2. Ragsdale dropped to 1-10.

THURSDAY GAMES

T.W. ANDREWS GIRLS, E. ALAMANCE

HAW RIVER — T.W. Andrews defeated Eastern Alamance 52-42 on Thursday in the Holiday Hoopla girls basketball tournament at Southeast Alamance.

Sanai Johnson scored 20 points to lead the Lady Raiders (7-0), who faced Green Level in the second round Friday. Nijayah Townes added eight points while Janiya Milligan and Journie Barr each had six points.

Tournament play will conclude today at Southeast Alamance.

ANDREWS, S. ALAMANCE BOYS

HAW RICER— Southern Alamance boys topped T.W. Andrews 63-37 in the boys portion of the Holiday Hoopla tournament at Southeast Alamance on Thursday. Andrews, which trailed 33-20 at the half, fell to 1-8.

TRINITY BOYS, EASTERN GUILFORD

ASHEBORO — Trinity beat Eastern Guilford 71-50 on Thursday in the SportsTone.net Christmas Invitational boys basketball tournament at Asheboro.

Dominic Payne scored 35 points to lead the Bulldogs (8-5), who met Providence Grove in Friday's games. Jacob Hodges followed with 13 points, while Brandon Campbell had nine points and Walker Parrish had six points.

Trinity's girls lost 49-10 against Randleman in Thursday's games and 43-11 against Leadership Academy in Friday's games.

SOUTHERN GUILFORD BOYS, LEAD ACADEMY

GREENSBORO — Southern Guilford rolled past Lead Academy (Tenn.) 72-47 on Thursday in the Phenom Hoops Gate City Holiday Classic basketball showcase at Smith.

Jamias Ferere and Jyi Dawkins each had 16 points to lead the Storm (10-0). Jucqarie Love chipped in 14 points while Zyquiere McGee followed with seven points.

Southern, following Friday's game against Green Run (Va.), will face Caldwell on Saturday at 8 p.m. to close the tournament.

BISHOP McGUINNESS GIRLS, INDEPENDENCE

RALEIGH — Bishop McGuinness beat Independence 51-44 in the John Wall Invitational girls basketball showcase Wednesday at Peace University.

Kiersten Varner scored 18 points to lead the Villains (8-1), who were again without standout Adelaide Jernigan. Jenna Moore added 10 points, trailed by Claire Sullivan with eight and Emma Wagoner with six. Morgan Aho chipped in five points and 11 rebounds.

GREENSBORO — The North Carolina Good, Better, Best Academy National team defeated College Prep and Leadership Academy 82-72 in the Phenom Hopps Holiday Showcase on Thursday at Smith High.

WHEATMORE, FIRST FLIGHT

GREENSBORO — Kills Devil Hills First Flight downed Wheatmore 65-32 in the Phenom Hoops Holiday Showcase on Thursday at Smith High.

RAGSDALE, SMITH

GREENSBORO — Host school Smith High topped Ragsdale's boys 85-48 in the Phenom Hoops Holiday Showcase on Thursday.
