LOCAL ROUNDUP: Prep football hits conference play

Sep. 21—TRIAD — Area high school football is full conference mode this week. All nine games on the schedule will count towards conference records.

Only three teams will be at home — High Point Christian, Ragsdale and Thomasville. T.W. Andrews, High Point Central, Southwest Guilford, Bishop McGuinness, Glenn and Southern Guilford will be on the road.

East Davidson, Ledford, Oak Grove, Trinity and Wheatmore are off.

Here's a look at this week's games:

Northwest Piedmont 1A — Bishop McGuinness (1-3, 0-1) at Carver (0-4, 0-1), 7

Central Carolina 1A/2A — North Rowan (4-1, 1-0) at Thomasville (3-2, 0-1), 7:30

Mid-State 2A — T.W. Andrews (2-3) at Walkertown (1-3, 0-0), 7:30

BOYS SOCCER

T.W. ANDREWS, NORTH FORSYTH

HIGH POINT — T.W. Andrews fell 1-0 against North Forsyth in Mid-State 2A Conference boys soccer Wednesday at Correll-Morris Field. The Red Raiders dipped to 2-5-1 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, PAGE

GREENSBORO — Southwest Guilford lost 2-0 against Page in Metro 4A Conference boys soccer Wednesday at Page. The Cowboys dipped to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, GREENSBORO DAY

HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian rolled past Greensboro Day 4-0 in PTAC boys soccer Wednesday at Wesleyan's Sanford Field.

Isaiah McCarthy, Barrett Thurman, Mac Mills and Nata Souza each scored a goal for the Trojans (12-0-1 overall, 4-0 conference). Taj Johnson tallied two assists, while Souza and Sean Jacobs each had one.

Jayden DiFoggio and Grey Lunnen split time in goal.

EAST DAVIDSON, SOUTH DAVIDSON

THOMASVILLE — East Davidson defeated South Davidson 9-0 in Central Carolina 1A/2A Conference boys soccer Wednesday at Brown Middle. The Golden Eagles improved to 1-6-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference.

WHEATMORE, THOMASVILLE

THOMASVILLE — Wheatmore beat Thomasville 4-2 in nonconference boys soccer Thursday at Thomasville.

Laurel Ortiz scored two goals for the Warriors. Hayden Hemming and Owen Bailey each scored one goal, while Ryan Black had one assist. Michael McNamara made six saves in goal.

Wheatmore improved to 2-6-1 while the Bulldogs dipped to 3-8.

TRINITY, PROVIDENCE GROVE

FRANKLINVILLE — Trinity topped Providence Grove 5-1 in PAC 1A/2A boys soccer Wednesday at Providence Grove. The Bulldogs improved to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

GIRLS TENNIS

HIGH POINT CENTRAL, NORTHEAST GUILFORD

McLEANSVILLE — High Point Central swept Northeast Guilford 9-0 in Mid-State 3A Conference girls tennis Wednesday at Northeast Guilford.

Mallory Cook (6-1, 6-1), Jilliann Turner (6-2, 7-5), Reagan Bonsall (6-0, 6-1), Hannah Sutherby (6-0, 6-1), Cook/Turner and Patme Be/Raegan Hagerman (8-1) won for the Bison, who got forfeit wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Central improved to 2-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, NORTHERN GUILFORD

GREENSBORO — Southwest Guilford lost 6-3 against Northern Guilford in Metro 4A Conference girls tennis Wednesday at Northern Guilford.

Bella Johnson (6-3, 6-4) won in singles while Anna McGinnis/Caroline Church (8-4) and Evelyn McKnight/Caroline Christman (9-8 (7-2)) won in doubles for the Cowgirls, who dipped to 8-9 overall and 3-7 in the conference.

BISHOP McGUINNESS, CORNERSTONE CHARTER

GREENSBORO — Bishop McGuinness raced past Cornerstone Charter 9-0 in Northwest Piedmont 1A Conference girls tennis Wednesday at Latham Park.

Nina Holton (6-0, 6-0), Adelaide Jernigan (6-1, 6-0), Sarah Pulliam (6-2, 6-0), Lily Winters (6-0, 6-0), Caroline Duggan (6-0, 6-0) and Kate Dennen (6-0, 6-0) won in singles. Holton/Jernigan (8-1), Pulliam/Winters (8-0) and Anne Overman/Niki Hofer (8-2) won in doubles.

The Villains improved to 5-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

EAST DAVIDSON, NORTH ROWAN

SPENCER — East Davidson defeated North Rowan 6-3 in Central Carolina 1A/2A Conference Wednesday at North Rowan.

Adriana Dubon (6-4, 6-1), Emily Greene (6-2, 6-0), Ariana Jordan (6-3, 6-1), Dianelly Alvarenga (6-4, 6-0) and Aniya Duncan (6-1, 6-0) won in singles for the Golden Eagles. Greene/Anna Gissell Delid Saenz (8-0) won in doubles.

East Davidson improved to 3-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

LEDFORD, CENTRAL DAVIDSON

WALLBURG — Ledford rolled past Central Davidson 8-1 in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference girls tennis Wednesday at Ledford.

Kaleigh Batchek (6-0, 6-0), Brea White (6-1, 6-0), Nora Hill (6-0, 6-0), Katherine Goodman (6-1, 6-1), Helen Clodfelter (6-0, 6-1) won in singles. White/Hill (8-0), Goodman/Clodfelter (8-3) and Mia Yoemans/Sophie Wheat (8-4) won in doubles.

The Panthers improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

VOLLEYBALL

WESTCHESTER COUNTRY DAY, NEW GARDEN FRIENDS

HIGH POINT — Westchester Country Day swept New Garden Friends 25-14, 25-11, 25-7 in nonconference volleyball Wednesday at Westchester.

Emilie Carey had nine kills and nine aces for the Wildcats (3-7). Sutton Scott added 11 digs and two aces, while Cassie Woodall had 18 digs and four aces.

In the JV match, Westchester won 25-3, 25-12. Taylor Lloyd had six aces, Emma Hunsberger had 12 aces and Emory Smith had five kills and three aces.

CROSS-COUNTRY

AT SOUTHWEST GUILFORD

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford totaled seven top-25 finishes — including a win by Faneal Tsegay in the boys race — to highlight Wednesday's cross-country meet at Southwest.

Page won the girls team total with 27 points, while Southwest was fourth with 90. Grimsley won the boys team total with 23 points, and Southwest was third with 73.

Tsegay won the boys race in 18:23. Also posting top-25 finishes for Southwest were: Benjamin Runner (10th, 20:07.97), Micah Burkett (17th, 20:27.12) and Thomas Stout III (23rd, 20:59.13) for the boys; Faith Thomas (third, 22:04.39), Aubrey Walker-Smith (16th, 24:50.97) and Allison Haynes (22nd, 26:07.14).

AT WHEATMORE

TRINITY — Zach Hazelwood took first place individually to key a third-place team finish for Wheatmore's boys during Wednesday's PAC 1A/2A meet at Wheatmore.

Hazelwood finished in 18:48 to help the Warriors total 76 points. Providence Grove was first in the boys team scores with 32 and Trinity was fifth with 139. Uwharrie Charter won the girls team total with 26 points.

Finishing in the top 25 were: Wheatmore's Tyler McCormick (12th, 22:57), Tyler Wall (18th, 24:14) and Jonathan Heraldo (25th, 26:25) in the boys race and Olivia Hildreth (fifth, 27:04) and Mattie Foshie (12th, 30:02) in the girls race; plus Trinity's Trajan Johnson (20th, 24:40) in the boys race and Kaylay Franklin (15th, 32:36), Katlyn Albert (16th, 33:01), Madeline Jones (21st, 33:43) and Yanery Bello (23rd, 34:42) in the girls race.

AT ASHEBORO

ASHEBORO — Oak Grove took first in the boys race and second in the girls race to highlight Tuesday's cross-country meet at Asheboro.

Oak Grove — taking the top seven places and 10 of the top 12 — totaled 15 points in the boys team score, followed by North Davidson with 56 and Asheboro with 69. North won the girls team score with 21, followed by Oak Grove with 40 and Asheboro with 80.

Finishing in the top 10 for Oak Grove were: Aiden Edwards (first, 17:28), Luke Vannoy (second, 17:35), Hunter Creech (third, 17:53), Nathan Welborn (fourth, 17:56), Sam Carey (fifth, 18:05), Brayden Grover (sixth, 18:46), Evan Messer (seventh, 18:49) and Carter Bertschi (10th, 19:33) in the boys race; Natalia Everhart (third, 22:34), Isabella Lockamy (fourth, 22:38) and Elsa Helms (eighth, 26:17).

GIRLS GOLF

AT WINDING CREEK

THOMASVILLE — Ledford took second while East Davidson took third in Wednesday's three-team match at Winding Creek.

Central Davidson won with a 147 team score, followed by Ledford with a 154 and East Davidson with a 172.

Addison Sage shot a 47 to lead Ledford, followed by Kaylen McDow (48), Joclyn McClelland (59) and Izzy Farfan (63). Daniela Robles shot a 50 to lead East, trailed by Zoey Sprinkle (60) and Kaley Pham (62).
