Local athletes shine at UAW All-Star track and field meet (boys)

Centreville High School was the host for the St. Joseph County UAW All-Star track and field meet on Tuesday. There are no team scores kept at the event as each event featured the Top 8 athletes in the county based on performances throughout the season.

The Tim Baker award, given to the male and female athletes of the meet who earn the most points, were given to a pair of Three Rivers athletes. Kylin Griffin piled up 26 points to win while Jordan Pisco totaled 30 points at the meet.

The event was once again sponsored by local UAW. There were several UAW team members on site to hand out medals to those finishing in the top six spots for each event. The UAW has sponsored the county meet for 38 years.

Paige Smolarz, track coach for Colon, was this year’s winner of the Jack Grant award.

Pisco ran to first place in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.93 seconds. He also placed third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.50 seconds, claimed second in the high jump at 4-11 feet and finished third in the long jump at 20-3.5 feet.

White Pigeon’s Seth Miller won the shot put at 47-5 feet. Bennett VandenBerg of Constantine had a discus throw of 146-01 feet to win first place.

Sturgis’ Brock Fergison won the high jump, he cleared 6-3 feet.

Brody Jones of Constantine had a heigh of 12-9 to win the pole vaulting event.

Centreville’s Dylan Coney won the long jump at 20-5.5 feet.

Constantine won three of the four relays on the evening. The 800 relay team of Julian Hawthorne, Rushawn James, Collin Featherstone and Dean Topolski came in with a time of 1:32.08 to claim first. The same foursome won the mile relay with a time of 3:27.32, breaking a record that lasted only a year. Constantine’s mile relay team from 2022, which had Hawthorne, Featherstone and Topolski on it plus Charles Morris, ran at time of 3:27.7 last year. On Tuesday, Constantine’s two-mile relay team of Hawthorne, Caden Jackson, Isaac Moore and Featherstone ran a time of 9:09.63 to win.

James posted a time of 42.29 seconds to win the 300 hurdles, narrowly beating Michael Featherstone’s time of 42.74 seconds.

Centreville’s Logan Weis won the distance races. His time was 4:34.87 in the mile run and 10:08.18 in the two-mile run. Constantine’s Ethan Glick ran to second in the mile at 4:46.54 while Sullivan Zietlow of Three Rivers came in second for the two-mile at 10:35.16.

Topolski finished first in the 200 (23.35 seconds) and 400 (51.10 seconds) for Constantine. Jackson won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:03.80. Topolski was also the winner of the Linda Kay Johnson memorial scholarship.

Sturgis’ Rasean O’Tey had a time of 11.32 seconds to win the 100 dash. Teammate Brandin Kelley was right behind him in second place at 11.68 seconds. Kelley also finished with a personal-best run in the 200 dash, his time was 23.79 seconds to finish second overall.
