Lobo legend Terance Mathis set for College Football Hall of Fame induction

Dec. 4—Terance Mathis, a two-time All-American wide receiver for New Mexico, will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Mathis will join Brian Urlacher as one of just two Lobos to receive the honor. In an interview with the National Football Foundation this week, Mathis said he was completely surprised when he learned of his impending induction a little over a year ago.

"You're not saying, 'hey, when I go to the University of New Mexico, I'm gonna go into the College Football Hall of Fame,'" he said. "You didn't really realize it until later in the years and you go, 'what is this College Football Hall of Fame?' And you start seeing guys going in ... Just to be able to represent my university on this big stage, it's phenomenal.

"Not just for me. It's for them, and for the guys I played with, and before me and after me. The community, the administration, the state. It's for all of us."

From 1985-89, Mathis racked up 263 receptions, 4,254 receiving yards and 36 touchdowns on his way to three First-Team All-WAC selections with UNM. All three marks still stand as school records in addition to Mathis being the first player to finish with over 250 receptions, 4,000 receiving yards and 6,000 all-purpose yards.

Mathis went on to a successful 13-year career in the NFL, notching his most productive seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. The Stone Mountain, Ga., native hauled in 57 receiving touchdowns and 7,349 receiving yards from 1994-2001 with the Falcons, including a three-yard touchdown reception in Super Bowl XXXIII.
