HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Sandwich boys hockey wins South Shore League

1There is a new champion in the South Shore League for boys hockey. Sandwich (14-2) defeated Rockland 6-3 on Wednesday and are the new team at the top of the mountain. Chris Cardillo had a goal and an assist, while Avery Richardson, Brayden Ramsey, Jack Connolly, Logan Munk (first varsity) and Chris Rathbun (first varsity) each found the back of the net as well. Shane Corcoran dished out two assists, and Nicholas Buckland and Dylan McCabe each had one assist for Sandwich.2

Boys Hockey

Bourne 4, Seekonk 3 (OT): The Canalmen (10-3-1) needed extra time on Wednesday, but came away with a 4-3 victory over Seekonk in overtime as Joziah DeSouza hit the winning goal. James Crowell and Dana Leach each scored a goal and had an assist. Domenic Bonito (one goal), Ty Kelley (two assists), and Griffin Kelly and Caleb Kean (one assist each) also contributed on offense, while Jackson Palmborg had 27 saves in net for Bourne.

Upper Cape 4, South Shore Tech 3 (OT): The Rams (4-10) team pulled off the 4-3 win over South Shore Tech in overtime as senior Ty Rebeiro scored the winner. Senior Nolan Sullivan had two goals, while his fellow senior line mates, Ryan Hanson and Zephyn Johnson, each had two assists. Sophomore Kelan Keane added a power play goal as well for Upper Cape.

Falmouth 4, Pilgrim 2: Gavin Powderly notched a hat trick, while Travis Smith also found the back of the net for the Clippers (8-7).

Monomoy/Mashpee 4, D-Y/CCT/CCA 1: The Sharks (2-8-2) picked up their second win of the season behind a three point night (one goal, two assists) from Casey Huse. Max Cronen and Aidan Stone each scored a goal, while Nick Garneau had a goal and an assist. Owen Cloney also chipped in one assist. Andrew Popovich had the lone goal for D-Y.

Barnstable 6, St. John Paul II 2: The Red Hawks (6-7-2) have won back-to-back games for the second time this season. Brady Meyer and Liam Monaghan each scored for JPII (4-9-1).

Nantucket 4, Old Rochester 1: The Whalers (12-1) remained as the hottest team on Cape with their 12th straight victory.

Girls Hockey

Sandwich 4, Barnstable 2: The streak is over as the Blue Knights (5-8-1) snapped a eight game losing streak with the win over the Red Hawks (5-7-1). Adrianna Kelsch scored twice, while Casey Pestilli scored and dished out an assist for Sandwich. Ainsley Hopwood found the back of the net, and Emma Itri, Maddy Butler, Elisabeth Stutzman and Marley Dwyer each had one assist. Cate Buckler and Leah Bertling each scored, while Paige Huntington played well in net for Barnstable.

Nauset 5, Martha’s Vineyard 3: The Warriors (13-1-1) finished the month of January unbeaten at 9-0-1. The Vineyarders (8-5) snapped a two game win streak.

Falmouth 8, D-Y/CCA/JPII 3: The Clippers (13-1-1) ended the month of January undefeated at 8-0-1. The Dolphins fall to 2-10-1.

Boys Basketball

Bourne 73, Case 47: The Canalmen (13-1) were led on offense by Dom Qullelle (22 points) and Mike Dankert (20 points). Nate Reynolds chipped in 12 points, while Emery Robbins was the playmaker with eight assists for Bourne.

Sandwich 79, East Bridgewater 62: Two games in two nights, no problem, as the Blue Knights (7-6) won back-to-back games for the second time this season. Connor Finn led the way with 23 points and seven assists, while Cam Murphy knocked down four 3-pointers for 17 points. Luke Rodgers scored 13 points, Dan Oman added 12 points and four rebounds, and Matt Murray recorded 10 points and eight rebounds for Sandwich.

Wareham 95, Dennis-Yarmouth 55: The Dolphins dropped to 6-8.

Rising Tide 61, Sturgis East 54: The Storm fall to 2-11.

Girls Basketball

East Bridgewater 52, Barnstable 33: The Red Hawks (7-8) have hit a road block with their fifth straight loss. Chloe Egan led the way with 17 points, while Molly Gleason added eight for Barnstable.

Bourne 62, Bishop Stang 24: The Canalmen (11-1) bounced back from their first loss of the season Monday with a win. Paige Meda scored 19 points, while McKinley Wenzel added 14 and Haylee McDonald chipped in 13 points for Bourne.
