Postgame recap: Jacksonville Jaguars roll past Detroit Lions in second preseason game

The 2023 NFL preseason rolls into the second week for the Jacksonville Jaguars, heading into Michigan to take on the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

Early indications are that most Jaguars starters won't be in action. That could mean a rest for Trevor Lawrence, who completed five of his six pass attempts last week against the Dallas Cowboys in a solid start to his preseason. Among the other storylines: the meeting of the Jaguars' Travon Walker and the Lions' Aidan Hutchinson, the first-round edge rushers that topped the 2022 NFL Draft class.

Like the Jaguars, the Lions also won their preseason opener, beating the New York Giants 21-16. While playing time for frequently used players will likely be limited on both sides, it's one more opportunity to get into rhythm before the regular season opens in three weeks.

Quick feet and a tugboat tumble: Jaguars rookie offensive linemen impressing during camp

Takeaways: Jaguars dominate in win over Lions, but offensive line injuries cloud celebrations

C.J. Beathard got the start for Jacksonville with players like rookie running back Tank Bigsby getting the opportunity to show their skills and put out "game film" as they competed against the reserves of the Lions, rolling to a victory in Detroit. See the key takeaways. --Juston Lewis

Tanking it to the Lions: Jaguars rookie back Tank Bigsby has another big preseason game

There were times he ran like a Tank. But he also showed deft changes of direction, sharp cuts and the subtle art of making tacklers miss by mere inches. Jacksonville Jaguars rookie running back Tank Bigsby had another good preseason outing on Saturday in a 25-7 victory over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field, continuing to justify his selection in the third round from Auburn and showing additional promise of forming a potent one-two punch in the regular season with Travis Etienne. --Garry Smits

FINAL: Jacksonville Jaguars 25, Detroit Lions 7

The Jags climb to 2-0 in preseason in a dominant performance, outgaining the Lions by a 3-1 ratio.

3:00 Q4: Jaguars continue chewing up the clock

This one is going to end in the win column. The defense continues to dominate and the Jags now have Snoop Conner in the game, running for reliable yardage as they run down the clock.

13:35 Q4: Touchdown Jaguars: D'Ernest Johnson is back in the end zone

The Jaguars didn't waste the field position they gained after that Elijah Cooks catch. D'Ernest Johnson returned to the end zone, this time around the left end from 11 yards.

Jaguars 25, Lions 7.

0:00 3rd: End of third quarter

The Jaguars lead 18-7 over the Lions and they're driving again, after a 48-yard Elijah Cooks catch-and-run from Nathan Rourke.

2:04 Q3: Touchdown Jaguars: D'Ernest Johnson caps long drive with 1-yard run

Nathan Rourke is in the game for the third quarter, and the quarterback directed a steady drive upfield to restore the Jaguars' two-score lead. It ended with a 1-yard plunge from running back D'Ernest Johnson.

Jaguars 18, Lions 7.

8:37 Q3: Touchdown Lions: Detroit's Chase Cota converts fourth-down touchdown

With Jaguars higher on the depth chart watching from the sidelines, the Lions moved the ball pretty smoothly to open the third quarter. Nate Sudfeld marched Detroit inside the red zone, and on fourth and goal from the 1, he found a wide-open Chase Cota to put the Lions on the board.

Jaguars 12, Lions 7.

HALFTIME: Jaguars 12, Lions 0

That's an excellent first half for the Jaguars on defense, holding the Lions to fewer than 50 yards.

0:22 Q2: Touchdown Jaguars: C.J. Beathard connects with Parker Washington for TD

That's a rookie in the end zone. Parker Washington takes a short toss from C.J. Beathard and zooms to the house from 16 yards. A nice moment for the newcomer as the Jaguars convert that Gregory Junior pick into points. Doug Pederson went for two but Beathard's pass was incomplete.

Jaguars 12, Lions 0.

0:47 Q2: It's a pick! Gregory Junior adds another interception, runs it back inside 20

This preseason is getting even better for Gregory Junior. The second-year defensive back watches QB Nate Sudfeld all the way and pounces on the overthrow. Better yet for the Jaguars, Junior returns the ball to the 19. They're in business nearing halftime.

2:00 Q2: QB turns into receiver: Jaguars' C.J. Beathard catches his own pass

Add an attempt and a completion to C.J. Beathard's stat line... and a reception, too. The Jaguars' QB threw a pass that was batted at the line right back into his hands, where he caught it and tried to scramble out of trouble. Not a major play, but an oddity to add to the list in what has been an unusual game so far.

4:53 Q2: Field goal Jaguars: Brandon McManus extends lead

We've seen Jeremiah Ledbetter boost his stock on defense, and Jacob Harris is doing the same on offense with a nice reception over the middle during a very long Jaguars drive. C.J. Beathard had to survive a fair amount of pressure from the Detroit defensive front on that possession. In the end, Brandon McManus booted another field goal straight between the uprights.

Jaguars 6, Lions 0

End of first quarter: Jaguars 3, Lions 0

Solid first quarter for the Jags on D. There's been a significant negative, though, with the injury to rookie Cooper Hodges.

1:26 Q1: Jaguars blow up exchange, recover fumble

Big play on D there. Jeremiah Ledbetter blew up the heart of the Detroit offensive line and stripped Teddy Bridgewater before he could even complete his handoff, and Caleb Johnson recovered for the Jags. He almost took it back all the way but appeared to lose his footing, and the Lions caught up with him at the 28. A solid game so far for Ledbetter.

2:52 Q1: Lions' Steven Gilmore intercepts C.J. Beathard

That's a turnover: C.J. Beathard looks down the left sideline for receiver Kevin Austin in coverage and the ball gets deflected into the hands of Lions defensive back Steven Gilmore.

6:15 Q1: Field goal Jaguars: Brandon McManus boots Jags in front

Not much offense so far for the Jaguars and Lions, but the Jags put together a nice march with help from a long completion from C.J. Beathard to Tim Jones. That set up a field goal from Brandon McManus.

Some bad news, though: Rookie offensive lineman Cooper Hodges, from Baker County High School, was helped from the field to the injury tent after going down on the field goal attempt.

Jaguars 3, Lions 0.

Ready for football: Lions offense at work - with Teddy Bridgewater wearing No. 50 jersey at quarterback for Detroit

Detroit will get the football first, with Teddy Bridgewater and his No. 50 jersey behind center. Yes, this is real, and no, that isn't a normal number for QBs.

Kickoff time nears

It's almost time for the Jaguars and Lions to begin inside Ford Field. Follow along for updates.

Gene Frenette: 2023 schedule convenient for Jaguars to finally get off to fast start

Among the more distressing trends in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ history has been their notoriously slow starts. Not just in the first quarter of games, but the first quarter of the season. --Gene Frenette

Jaguars wanted to build roster depth. Wide receiver and defensive backs are prime examples of how it's working

One of the goals to build on last season for the Jacksonville Jaguars' front office and coaching staff this season was to improve the back end of the roster. Two position groups in particular, wide receiver and defensive back, seem to be fulfilling that goal and when the final cutdown day comes, coach Doug Pederson and his staff may have some agonizing moments before making their final decision. But it’s a great problem to have. --Garry Smits

Quick feet and a tugboat tumble: Jaguars rookie offensive linemen Anton Harrison and Cooper Hodges impressing during camp

There won't be much of a ramp-up period for Jacksonville Jaguars rookie right tackle Anton Harrison. He won't get a redshirt season, nor will he be asked to battle for his position during preseason action. No, he's the team's starter, tasked with protecting the team's most prized possession: Trevor Lawrence. --Demetrius Harvey

Gene Frenette: Pro Football HOF should clear bigger path for Tom Coughlin, deserving coaches

Let’s get this out of the way first: Tom Coughlin not being the Pro Football Hall of Fame nominee in the coach/contributor category for the Class of 2024 isn’t the worst miscarriage of justice. Rather, what needs to be tweaked is a system that restricts the voters to a maximum of one coach/contributor candidate being eligible for entry into the Hall of Fame. --Gene Frenette

Don’t forget about Zay: Jaguars’ WR Zay Jones reflects on his career, upcoming season

Zay Jones went racing from the line of scrimmage. He zoomed down the sideline with heightened pace, slowing his route for a moment before regaining his speed. He peaked over his shoulder as a ball dropped into his grasp, but his foot came down just beyond the boundary at the back of the end zone.

“Was his timing off?” Jones asked one of the nearby offensive assistants for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He wanted to figure out why a patented route landed him about a foot farther than he intended. --Juston Lewis

Will Trevor Lawrence play for the Jaguars against the Lions?

It doesn't look like it. Early indications are that the third-year quarterback and multiple other Jaguars starters may remain on the sidelines for Saturday's game in Detroit.

Jaguars will reap benefits from quarterback Trevor Lawrence's maturity, leadership skills

For Trevor Lawrence and everyone in the Jaguars’ organization, it was a poignant scene, albeit accompanied by the feeling of a massive letdown. As players walked off the Arrowhead Stadium field in January — the emotional wounds from a 27-20 AFC Divisional playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs still quite raw — the Jaguars’ 23-year-old quarterback made it a point to stand in the tunnel and greet his teammates as they walked back to the locker room. So much from Trevor was packed into that scene. --Gene Frenette
