Ohio's Hagey, Northern State's Harrison win 10,000-meter races

The final events of the Distance Carnival — the monster 10,000-meter runs — capped Thursday's action at Drake Stadium.

Ohio's Theresa Hagey comfortably claimed the women's 10,000-meter race, with a winning time of 34:53.10. The sophomore never dropped lower than sixth throughout the race, but didn't claim the lead until there were eight laps left. Once Hagey took the lead, she never relinquished it, beating Paola Ramos, who finished second in 35:24.30, and Drake's Carmen Krawczynski Gonzalez, third in 35:38.69.

In the men's 10,000, Northern State's Jackson Harrison won in 29:51.59, thanks to a wicked final lap that allowed him to pass Nadir Yusuf. Harrison stayed within a second of Yusuf, who led for 24 laps in this 25-lap race, the entire way, then ran his final lap in 67.91 seconds to beat Yusuf by almost three full seconds. Yusuf's runner-up finish was clocked at 29:54.49. Emad Bashir-Mohammed, from St. Mary in Kansas, took third in 30:05.53.
