Live updates: Nicholls hosts No. 10 Sacramento State to kick off college football season

Nicholls football starts its 2023 season on Thursday. The Colonels are looking to improve on a 3-8 campaign a season ago, and will start this year by hosting the No. 10 Sacramento State Hornets. The game will be shown on ESPN+ at 6 p.m.

Nicholls is coming off a 3-8 season, but was still voted to finish fourth in the Southland Conference. The Hornets, on the other hand, won their first 12 games in 2022 before falling to Incarnate Word in the FCS quarterfinals. However, Sacramento State will be led by rookie head coach Andy Thompson, who was promoted from defensive coordinator following former coach Troy Taylor leaving for the same position at Stanford.

An upset win would go a long way for the Colonels in their attempt to claim a spot in the FCS playoffs for the first time since the 2019 season.
