Recap: Iowa State football takes down Kansas State with big-play offense

The Iowa State football team ended its regular season with a bang on Saturday night, taking down No. 19 Kansas State, 42-35.

It was a coming out party for true freshman Abu Sama, who had one of the best rushing performances in Iowa State history on the snowy field in Manhattan, Kansas. The Southeast Polk grad had three touchdowns on the night and averaged over 15 yards per carry.

On fourth down, Iowa State turns the ball over on downs. Rocco Becht and Co. will take over from deep in their own territory.

K-State has timeouts remaining though.

On fourth-and-7 near midfield Will Howard tosses a deep shot and draws a PI on Beau Freyler. Wildcats' drive continues and it'll be first down at the Cyclone's 34

On fourth-and-7 from deep in their own territory, K-State converts to keep their drive alive. They're out near midfield now

4Q/5:47 Iowa State can't convert pick into points

But they do flip the field. After a three-and-out, Tyler Perkins drops in a beauty of a punt that the coverage team downs at the Kansas State 2-yard line.

Wildcats will have 98 yards to go to try and tie the game.

4Q/7:24 Iowa State nabs an interception

Cyclones might be able to put this one to bed here. Iowa State picks off Will Howard at the KSU 38-yard line.

It was Gerry Vaughn who got up in the air and grabbed the ball. Cyclones take over with great field position.

4Q/8:04 Yet another big play from Iowa State

On third-and-long Rocco Becht finds Jaylin Noel short of the sticks. He makes a move to get around a K-State defender and speeds down the sideline to the end zone from 82 yards out.

4Q/12:31 Back and forth we go

Iowa State hangs another touchdown on the board. Rocco Becht hit Jayden Higgens from 33 yards out to find the end zone.

4Q/14:49 K-State re-takes the lead

Will Howard is heating up for K-State. He led the Wildcats down the field with his arm and legs. But it was Treshaun Ward who punched the ball into the end zone from two yards out. It was an 11-play, 75-yard drive to take the lead again.

K-State up 35-28.

K-State has the ball in the red zone to start the final frame.

3Q/4:53 Abu Sama is good at football

The true freshman just strolled into the end zone for the third time today. This time it was from 72 yards out.

Sama is up to 268 yards tonight and is averaging close to 25 yards per carry. That is slightly insane.

Iowa State tied up with K-State, 28-28.

3Q/6:36 We've got a barnburner on our hands

Kansas State answers the Iowa State touchdown with one of their own. Will Howard found the edge and took the ball in from five yards out. K-State hit on a 2-point conversion too, thanks to a Phillip Brooks run and a broken tackle.

The drive, and a lot of the K-State offense tonight, was set up by big plays from Ben Sinnott. He had a 44-yard catch on that drive.

K-State up 28-21.

3Q/10:37 Iowa State re-takes the lead

The Cyclones strike quickly again, posting another two-play scoring drive. Rocco Becht hit Jaylin Noel in stride over the middle and the speedy WR took it the distance for a 79-yard score.

Wildcats have the ball and start their drive from their own 22.

K-State gets the ball to start the second half.

2Q/0:15 K-State takes the lead

The turnover on the fumble comes back to bite the Cyclones. On third-and-10, Will Howard finds Ben Sinnott, who breaks a tackle and scampers into the endzone from 15 yards out.

2Q/1:04 Cyclones cough the ball up

Iowa State seemed poised to get the last possession of the half after the defense forced a punt, but the ball hit a Cyclone blocker as it was coming down and the Wildcats recovered the ball. They have the ball at the ISU 41 to start the drive.

2Q/8:55 K-State answers back with a TD

The Wildcats find the end zone for the first time all night with a one-yard run from DJ Giddens, his ninth rushing score of the year. That play capped a 12-play, 87-yard drive that took just over five minutes off the clock.

One point game now. Iowa State up 14-13.

2Q/14:47 Hello again, Abu Sama

The freshman likes scoring on the first plays of quarters, it seems. Sama takes the snap, breaks a tackle and gets to the outside. Then uses his speed to run 77 yards to the end zone.

END OF FIRST QUARTER: Iowa State 7, Kansas State 6

Cyclones have the ball facing a second-and-6 from their own 23 when the second quarter begins.

1Q/0:16 K-State adds on another FG

The Wildcats went on a nice drive that covered 80 yards in 14 plays, but they couldn't find the end zone. The ISU defense held firm when it had to and held K-State to a field goal try.

Chris Tennant drilled a 22-yard attempt to cut Iowa State's lead to just one. ISU up 7-6

1Q/8:17 K-State converts on FG

The Wildcats turn Sama's fumble into three points. The Cyclones defense stood strong in an and-goal situation, forcing a 23-yard field goal, which K-State drills.

Iowa State up 7-3.

1Q/11:53 Abu Sama loses the ball

Sama has been stellar so far in his college career, but he makes a freshman mistake early on tonight. He loses the football and K-State recovers at the ISU 39.

1Q/13:21 Cyclones defense forces a punt

Iowa State gives up a first down but then gets off the field shortly after. Cyclones will take the ball over at their own 19 after the punt.

1Q/14:42 Hello, Abu Sama

On the first play from scrimmage, the Cyclones had the ball to Abu Sama and he breaks through the middle all the way to the end zone for a 71-yard score.

The former Southeast Polk star is becoming a Big 12 star now.

K-State wins the toss and defers to the second half. Rocco Becht and Co. will have the ball to start this one.

6:15 p.m. Iowa State down its top two running backs

Shortly before the game, our Iowa State beat reporter Travis Hines confirmed that Eli Sanders and Cartevious Norton are not with the team for Saturday’s game at No. 19 Kansas State, according to a school spokesperson.

Sanders leads the Cyclones with 477 yards on 102 carries despite missing two games earlier this season to injury. Norton is second on the team with 343 yards on 87 carries. The pair have combined for seven touchdowns on the year.

Expect a heavy dose of freshman Abu Sama, a Southeast Polk graduate.
