Purdue basketball holds off Illinois in Big Ten finale with 19 points from Brandon Newman

One thing is certain with the final Big Ten game upon us: Purdue will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament after securing an outright title with a 63-61 win at Wisconsin on Thursday.

Every seed after that? It gets a little confusing. Seven teams are tied in second place with 11-8 records. The Illinois Fighting Illini (20-10 overall) is one of those teams.

The Boilermakers (25-5 overall, 14-5 Big Ten) are 3-4 in their last seven games. Today's game will be the first time it has faced Illinois this season.

That was a wild one. Purdue's big lead in the second half was whittled down, but thanks to solid free throw shooting, the Boilermakers walked away with the win.

Brandon Newman, who had a pair of crucial free throws in the final seconds, led Purdue with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Zach Edey contributed 17 points and 6 rebounds while Braden Smith had 15 points.

Purdue shot 47% from the floor and 33% from 3. Illinois was very similar in that regard with 48% from the floor and 32% from 3.

Illinois missed three straight free throws, then RJ Melendez made one to cut the lead down to 5 points. Braden Smith then went to the free throw line and missed the first but made the second.

Illinois' Luke Goode took a deep 3-pointer and nailed it. The lead is 3 with Purdue at the foul line.

Illinois had a chance to take the lead on a pair of free throws by Matthew Mayer, but he missed one, so the game was tied at 67-67. Purdue once led by 24 points in the second half.

Zach Edey broke the tie with a basket in the paint.

Purdue hasn't scored in over 2 minutes. Things are getting tight for the Boilermakers, who once had a 24-point lead in the second half. Illinois is outscoring Purdue 35-18 in this half.

While Purdue is being outscored 26-16 in the second half, the Boilermakers are shooting 52% from the floor (Illinois is shooting 48%).
