Game recap: Zach Edey leads Purdue to Maui Invitational title, with No. 1 national ranking on the way

No. 2 Purdue basketball plays No. 5 Marquette for the Maui Invitational championship on Wednesday. The winner of this game could ascend to No. 1 in the nation next week.

The Boilermakers (5-0) outwrestled No. 8 Tennessee 71-67 in a semifinal game behind Fletcher Loyer and Zach Edey, who combined for 50 points. For the second straight game, Purdue struggled in the first half but surged early in the second half to gain the lead.

The Golden Eagles (5-0) beat No. 1 Kansas 73-59 in the other semifinal behind Oso Ighodaro (21 points, 9 rebounds) and Kam Jones (10 points). Tyler Kolek averages 11.8 points, 5.4 assists and 5.0 rebounds.

Purdue is set to become the nation's No. 1 team after winning the Maui Invitational. It also posts its 30th straight non-conference regular-season victory.

Edey struggles mightily early but ends up with a familiar stat line: 28 points, 15 rebounds. Braden Smith bounces back from a rough outing to power Purdue early and finish with 18 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds.

Also contributing: Lance Jones (11 points, including a 70-footer at the halftime buzzer) and Fletcher Loyer (10 points).

The Boilermakers are scorching from 3-point range early and finishes 10-of-21. Marquette's pressure defense forces 15 Purdue turnovers. As usual, Purdue holds a significant rebounding edge (+13).

Tyler Kolek leads Marquette with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists, and Kam Jones adds 17 points and 5 assists.
