HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Castano gets 2,000th assist in playoff win for D-Y volleyball

After back-to-back state championship appearances the last two seasons, the Dennis-Yarmouth (No. 11) girls volleyball team started the road back there with a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-21, 25-21) at home over Ashland (No. 22) in Division 3, Round of 32 action on Thursday.

Junior Vivian Castano finished with 27 assists, and notched her 2,000th career assist in the win for D-Y (12-8). Mariah Eaton had 12 kills and two blocks, while Juliyana Hristova added nine kills and two blocks. Ellen Swanson led the defense with 25 digs.

Volleyball

Division 5, Round of 32: No. 24 St. John Paul II 3, No. 9 Innovation Academy 1: The Lions (14-6) won their second match of the postseason with an upset victory over a top 10 team in four sets (25-27, 27-25, 25-10, 25-17). Rosanna Sullivan (six aces, nine kills, 15 digs), and Zlata Alioshka (two aces, two kills, 18 assists, nine digs) led the way with good all-around performances. Molly Pulit (one ace, one kill, 23 digs), and Victoria Imad (two digs, two kills, seven aces) also contributed in the win.

Division 5: No. 2 Bourne 3, No. 31 Georgetown 0: The Canalmen (16-5) picked up their first win of the playoffs with a sweep (25-9, 25-21, 25-12). Lily Russell led the defense with 18 digs. On offense, multiple players had kills. Sofia Halunen led with 10 kills, while Nola Timo (8), Leah Barlow (3) Carley May (3) and Mayla Muldoon (3) also contributed.

Division 5, Round of 32, No. 20 Cape Tech 3, No. 13 Mohawk Trail Reg. 0: The Crusaders (16-4) won their second match of the playoffs as they pull off the upset on the road.

Girls Soccer

Division 4, Prelims: No. 36 Sturgis East 2, No. 29 Mashpee 1: After they trailed 1-0 in the first half, the Storm (11-7) scored twice in the second half for the road win. Charlotte Westberg and Isabella Spooner each scored for Sturgis East. Izzy Almeida scored the lone goal in the first half, while Norah Paolini played well in goal for Mashpee (5-12-1).

Division 4, Prelims: No. 34 Clinton 5, No. 31 Nantucket 1: The Whalers (8-11) fell short in their first game of the postseason.

Boys Soccer

Division 1, Prelims: No. 37 King Philip Regional 1, No. 28 Barnstable 0: The Red Hawks came up just short in their first playoff matchup and finished the season 10-4-5.

Field Hockey

Division 3, Round of 32: No. 8 Dennis-Yarmouth 3, No. 25 North Middlesex 0: The Dolphins (8-7-4) kicked off their postseason with a shutout win at home. Charleigh Hicks carried the ball down the field , sending it in the circle to Leah Woodward who sent it across the goal. Megan McDowell redirected the shot to score in the first 20 seconds of the game. Woodward knocked in the second goal unassisted in the third quarter, while the third goal was scored by Lilly Anderson on a penalty corner assisted by Jenna Richard and McDowell.

Division 3, Round of 32: No. 4 Sandwich 6, No. 29 Ashland 0: The Blue Knights (18-0-1) remain unbeaten and started their playoff run with a home shutout victory. Quinn Jordan led with a hat trick and one assist. Elisabeth Stutzman finished with one goal and one assist, Khloe Schultz and Sadie Clarkin each scored a goal, and Julia Giampietro dished out two assists.

Division 4, Round of 32: No. 15 St. John Paul II 2, No. 18 Tyngsborough 0: In their first ever home playoff game, the Lions (12-2-4) came away with a shutout victory. The Lions offense dominated throughout the game with 16 corners. Kaylee Anthony scored first on an assist from Mia Curley, and Michaela Stampfl added the second goal with another assist from Curley.

Football (Non Playoff)

Nauset 35, Oliver Ames 7: Isaiah Robinson was effective on both sides of the ball for the Warriors (2-6) with two receiving touchdowns, and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a score. Quarterback Brendan Peno was as well as he threw three touchdowns, and had a pick on defense.

Logan Daniels Julien had a rushing touchdown, while Owen White had a receiving touchdown. Evan Archer had two interceptions, and Laith Zaineh also picked off a pass. The offensive line was led by Peter Silvernail.

Seekonk 22, Monomoy 20: The Sharks (3-6) fell just short at home.
