LIVE UPDATES: Penn beats Mishawaka in 'Backyard Brawl'. South Bend Riley rolls at Glenn

SOUTH BEND — Week 2 of high school football in Indiana and Opening week north of the border for Tribune-area Michigan teams is in the books.

No. 5 (5A) Mishawaka visits crosstown rival No. 9 (6A) Penn Friday night in the renewal of the classic "Backyard Brawl." It's the first time this decade that the Cavemen and Kingsmen will meet since the longstanding series was interrupted after 2019.

Tribune high school reporter Austin Hough, columnist Tom Noie and photographer Greg Swiercz will be at Penn's Everwise Field for this important clash of programs hitting their strides.

FINAL: Penn 28, Mishawaka 7

Series: Penn leads 46-15-1 in “The Backyard Brawl” which began with 0-0 tie in 1965. … Kingsmen won last meeting 21-13 on Oct. 18, 2019 at Mishawaka one season after Cavemen prevailed in overtime 49-42 on Oct. 12 at Freed Field.

FINAL: South Bend Riley 20, Glenn 0

When/Where: Friday 7 p.m. at Hostrawser Field, Walkerton.

Series: Northern Indiana Conference North-South Division opener for both teams. … Falcons’ 38-24 victory on Aug. 26, 2022 in South Bend gave Glenn a three-game winning streak in the series which is tied 4-4. … Wildcats last prevailed 26-14 in Walkerton on Oct. 18, 2019.

FINAL: Bremen 41, South Bend Washington 7

When/Where: Friday 7 p.m. at Everwise School Field, South Bend.

Series: Bremen leads 6-2 and is riding three-game winning streak following 42-6 victory last season. … Washington’s last victory was 28-25 in 2019 at Bremen.

FINAL: Grand Rapids West Catholic 56, Edwardsburg 12

When/Where: Friday 7 p.m. at Leo Hoffman Field, Edwardsburg.

Series: West Catholic leads 1-0 following 28-20 season-opening victory at Hope College in Holland last Aug. 26.
