Lion women's win streak at 14 after defeat of UCO

Feb. 5—The Missouri Southern women's basketball team outlasted a feisty Central Oklahoma Bronchos squad to claim its 14th straight win — a 64-58 victory Saturday at UCO.

Both teams struggled to score in the early stages of the opening quarter, but the Lions managed to gain a 6-3 advantage with 4 minutes left.

Southern (17-4, 13-2) extended its lead to 11-3 off a Maggie Sockey layup at 1:27. Morgan Meyers added a trey with 46 seconds left to put Southern up 14-5.

UCO (5-16, 4-11) made good on two free throws to make it a 14-7 game after one quarter of play.

A Hannah Burg trey gave Southern its first double-digit lead at 23-13 with 2:03 left in the half. Ryan Franklin increased the lead to 12 at 27-15 with a jumper to close out the half.

MSSU held UCO scoreless for the first six minutes of the second half and orchestrated an 11-0 run to go up 38-15 off a Kaitlin Hunnicutt 3-pointer with 4:36 remaining in the quarter.

The Bronchos outscored Southern 18-7 the rest of the quarter to tighten the game at 45-33 heading into the final stanza.

UCO managed to claw back to within 10 several times, but a Franklin jumper put the Lions up 14 at 61-47 with 2:15 left.

The Bronchos put together an 11-0 run over the next minute and a half to climb to within 3 points at 61-58, but the Lions hit three free throws to hold on for the 64-58 win.

Franklin led MSSU with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds; Burg added 10 points, five steals and eight rebounds.

Alexis Martin scored 20 for the Bronchos, while Alena Wilson had 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

The Lions return home for a game against Lincoln at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
