In need of some linebacking help this offseason, the Miami Dolphins could be close to landing their first new signing of free agency. Former Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons plans to visit with Miami during free agency, something that should put the Miami Dolphins in a position to add at least one new starting linebacker to its corps this offseason.
Despite being 30-years old already, Timmons is a player that will immediately serve as a boost to the Dolphins struggling linebacking corps. Durable and consistent when he is on the field, Timmons has become one of the league’s most looked up to linebackers in recent seasons. While he won’t set the world on fire, he is someone that can be depended on.

With Miami working on a long term deal for linebacker Kiko Alonso, the team also has to focus on adding two new starting linebackers following last season’s extremely disappointing play. Having injury and depth issues at the position all season long, the Dolphins finished the season 18th in the NFL in points allowed while finishing 29th in total yards allowed per game.
For a team that is looking to make back-to-back playoff appearances this season, this type of play has to stop. While one starting linebacker position could be addressed during the upcoming NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins will need to add another starter through free agency. Such is where Lawrence Timmons comes in.
Recording over 100 combined tackles every season since 2012, Timmons is someone that has a proven ability to hunt down the ball carrier. While Timmons will not be a great pass rusher — 17.5 sacks since 2012 — he is someone that the Dolphins need. A never quit linebacker that can get to the ball carrier. Given the play of the linebackers last season, such an addition would present a major improvement for this team.
Adding a player like Zach Cunningham or T.J. Watt through April’s NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins may already solve their linebacking problem if they can sign Timmons when he comes for his free agency visit. Letting him leave Miami without a signature wouldn’t be the end of the world, but it could already put the Dolphins behind the eight ball this offseason.
