Lincoln Riley puts receivers in 1-on-1 situations where their speed can win

Lincoln Riley acquires fast receivers in the transfer portal. Then he puts those receivers in position to win mano-a-mano matchups with their speed.

Riley Files analyst Kegan Reneau recalled specific plays which affirm how Riley puts his receivers in position to thrive.

“In 2016, OU versus Texas, there was a play when Baker Mayfield ran play action,” Reneau said. “He’s rolling out to his left and hit Dede Westbrook. It’s a 60-yard bomb down the middle of the field on that play. They acted and ran action to the right. They booted Baker Mayfield to the left. They took a tight end across the middle of the field. What did that do? The playside safety came down and guess what? Dede Westbrook has a one-on-one (matchup) on a safety on the backside. I can tell you this: I know Dede Westbrook only ran a 4.5 40 (yard dash) at the NFL combine, but if you’re gonna pick a guy that’s gonna win a footrace, I feel pretty confident in Dede Westbrook.

“He (Lincoln) added that element in 2016 and that became a staple of their offense. A after that they ran it in 2018. Remember the Florida Atlantic game, that bomb Marquise Brown caught on the same play (as 2016 OU-Texas)? Remember the TCU game in 2020, when Spencer Rattler absolutely shredded TCU’s defense. Those were the same exact plays from the same family. It’s those things that he’s added.”
