Lewis, Brady qualify for final day at state golf championship

Oct. 25—COLLEGE PARK — Southern's Hank Lewis and Allegany's Sean Brady qualified for the final round of the Class 2A/1A Maryland state tournament at the University of Maryland on Wednesday.

Brady entered the last day tied for 18th in the classification after shooting a 12-over 83. Lewis was tied for 24th with an 84.

Lewis had one of the state's top final rounds with an 8-over 79 for a two-day total of 163. Brady shot a 90 Wednesday to end with a 173. Lewis finished tied for 26th and Brady finished tied for 74th.

While no area schools qualified for the state golf tournament team competition, Lewis and Brady made the finals in College Park by virtue of their individual regional performances.

Lewis shot a 76 and Brady a 79 at the regional in Black Rock in Hagerstown to qualify for states. Patrick Carl of South Carroll was the regional low medalist, and he finished tied for fifth at states with a two-day total of 154.

Noah Wallace (North East) was the 2A/1A state individual champion with a 148, one stroke better than Hereford's Adam Greene.

South Carroll won the team competition by 25 strokes over Poolesville.

Owen Newberry of Crofton bested Benjamin Siriboury of River Hill in a one-hole playoff for the 4A/3A individual championship after both ended with two-day totals of 142.

River Hill took the team title.

River Hill's Helen Yeung captured her third consecutive girls 4A/3A state championship, and Poolesville's Olivia Cong was the 2A/1A girls champ.
