Morenci Tournament

MORENCI — Madison and Morenci will face off in the finals of the Morenci Holiday Tournament Thursday after the Trojans and Bulldogs pulled out victories.

Madison beat Onsted 39-38 while Morenci defeated Quincy 47-23.

Madison trailed Onsted by two going into the fourth quarter and in the final 30 seconds but were saved when reigning Lenawee County Player of the Week, Nevaeh Parish, scored on a layup with four seconds remaining to put the Trojans in front by one.

“She drove to the basket to seal the game,” Madison coach Javon Jenkins said.

Marianna Carbajal-Fuentes scored all six of her points in the fourth quarter for Madison while Parish (14 points) hit two field goals and Jaeda Parish (10 points) hit a 3-pointer.

Madison, who has beaten Onsted twice this month, is 6-1. The game does not count as an LCAA game.

Karlie Kimerer led Onsted (3-3) with nine points while JayElle Christian and Ainsley Brezvai scored eight each. Christian pulled down 13 rebounds and Brezvai had six.

Morenci got 15 points from Emersyn Bachelder in reaching the finals.

Leah Rorick scored nine points and Colbie Ekins added eight for Morenci, who is off to a 6-0 start.

Onsted will take on Quincy in the consolation game at 5 p.m. Thursday. The finals between Madison and Morenci will follow.

Brandywine 45, Blissfield 43

FERNDALE — The Royals held a lead in the fourth quarter but fell to a highly-thought of Brandywine team.

Avery Collins scored 20 points and had eight rebounds while Peyton Tennant scored eight points and pulled down 17 rebounds.

Brandywine led by four points late before the Royals closed the gap to two before the final buzzer. The Royals were missing two regulars.

“It was a gritty performance,” Blissfield coach Ryan Gilbert said.

Blissfield (3-1) has another game scheduled in the Michigan Hardwood Classic. The Royals play at 11 a.m. Thursday against Dexter.

MORENCI — A stiff defense allowed Madison to hand Morenci its first loss and take home the championship trophy in the inaugural Morenci Holiday Tournament, 30-27.

The Trojans allowed 11 field goals in the game and never let the Bulldogs reach double figures in any one quarter.

Offensively, they had enough as Caylan Sower scored 12 points and Jaeda Parish added eight.

“Defense won us the game,” Madison coach Javon Jenkins said. “We were cold offensively.”

Madison (7-1) held a 15-2 advantage in the third quarter.

Addyson Valentine led Morenci (6-1) with 13 points. Leah Rorick scored 8.

Onsted captured third place with a 41-25 win over Quincy.

Karlie Kimerer scored 14 points, Hannah Hill scored 10 and JayElle Christian had eight. Kimerer added six boards, four steals and four assists while Christian had seven boards and Hill six.

Onsted held Quincy to eight second-half points.

Blissfield 51, Dexter 44

FERNDALE — Playing their second game in 24 hours, the Royals came out on top against SEC-Red co-leader Dexter.

“We made the most of our opportunities,” Blissfield coach Ryan Gilbert said.

Avery Collins went to the free throw line 24 times and scored 20 points. She also had seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Peyton Tennant added 10 points and 14 rebounds for Blissfield (4-1).

Boys Basketball

Onsted 73, Wayne Memorial 69

FERNDALE — Ayden Davis collected game MVP honors after the Wildcat senior scored 42 points and pulled down 21 rebounds in the Onsted win.

Onsted led by two at halftime and two through three quarters before pulling out the win.

Aidan Paquin scored 12 points and dished out six assists. Talan Hutchinson had nine assists and JT Hill had seven for the Wildcats (5-2).

Lenawee Christian 66, Concord 56

SPRING ARBOR — Jaxen Salenbien poured in 29 points as Lenawee Christian beat Concord in the opening game of the Shot Clock Classic on the campus of Spring Arbor University.

Salenbien scored eight points in the opening quarter while Daniel Scrupsky (13 points) and Brandon Summer (12 points) hit 3-pointers to get the Cougars off to a great start.

The Cougars played well despite being down a starter, Aidan Kaulkins.

“It affected our flow and spacing on offense,” LCS coach Matt Summer said. “Our other guys stepped up, though. Paul (Towler) and Jesse (Miller) played some big minutes. Seth Davis had some really good minutes in the second half.”

Paul Towler and Jesse Miller helped guard Concord’s talented Mekhi Wingfield.

The Shot Clock Classic was a full day of games with teams voluntarily utilizing a 35-second shot clock on offensive possessions. Summer said for the most part having a shot clock didn’t affect the flow of the game.

“For the majority of the game it didn’t,” he said. “It makes a difference at the end of quarters, end of game.”

LCS has won three straight games and is 6-2. Concord, who are in first place in the Big 8 Conference, fell to 5-3.
