LCU sweeps West Texas A&M with two extra-inning victories

Carson Ogilvie doubled and scored in the bottom of the 12th inning Saturday as Lubbock Christian University beat West Texas A&M 3-2 at Hays Field and swept a Lone Star Conference baseball tournament first-round series in two games.

LCU starting pitcher Ryan Markwardt went nine innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Winning pitcher Chris Shull (4-1) delivered three scoreless innings in relief.

Ogilvie started the winning rally with a leadoff double. Ogilvie tagged and went to third on Brevin McCool's fly ball, then came home when the throw from right field skipped past third baseman Adam Becker.

LCU (33-19) advances to the second week of the conference tournament. The first-round series winners will play a four-team, double-elimination bracket at the home of the highest remaining seed.

West Texas A&M (30-22) lost all six games it played against LCU this season.

Chaps took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Caden Hensley and a run-scoring double by Ogilvie. The Buffaloes tied with run-scoring singles by Will Fuenning in the sixth inning and Mike Manetta in the seventh.

In Friday's series opener, Ogilvie hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the 10th, lifting No. 4 seed LCU to a 13-12 victory over No. 5 seed West Texas A&M.

Nate Van Maanen, Jarred Gibson and Shull also homered for the Chaps.

Ogilvie's walk-off homer off Reese Miller (4-4) went to left field and enabled him to hit for the cycle for the second time this season. The Chaps' leadoff-batting shortstop singled in the first inning, tripled home a run and scored in the fourth and doubled in the sixth.

McCool, batting behind Ogilvie in the No. 2 hole, finished 4 for 5 with four RBI and three runs scored. The third baseman from Hobbs, New Mexico, hit RBI triples in the first and fourth innings and a two-run double in the sixth.

West Texas A&M forced extra innings on Eddy Savoie's two-out, two-run single in the ninth that tied it 12-12.

Shull pitched a scoreless 10th for the victory.

Trailing 6-2 in the third, LCU got a three-run homer from Van Maanen and a tying solo shot by Gibson.

West Texas A&M rallied within 11-10 with three runs in the seventh, the last two on a Fuenning home run. Shull answered with a solo homer in the LCU seventh.

Shull has 14 home runs this season, Van Maanen 12 and Gibson 10.
