Latest on FA Cup after third round: Arsenal eliminated, seven EPL teams in replays

The 143rd iteration of one of England's biggest soccer competitions is well underway.

This weekend brought an exciting third round for many of the top clubs in Great Britain in the FA Cup, but a few draws during the round mean it's not quite over yet.

Seven teams from the English Premier League, the country's top soccer league, will have to participate in third-round replays next weekend. It's the highest number of Premier League clubs involved in replays in a decade.

There were several exciting clashes over the weekend beyond the draws that forced replay matches.

Liverpool took down Arsenal in a battle between two of the top teams in the Premier League despite missing two of their top players. Aston Villa, another of the EPL's top teams, advanced to the fourth round with a late goal to give them a tight win over Middlesbrough, an EFL Championship team.

Arsenal out of FA Cup with third round loss to Liverpool

One of the most anticipated matches of the third round was a face-off between Liverpool and Arsenal, two of the top four teams in the Premier League this season.

Liverpool were missing Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk in the match with the former playing with the Egyptian national team and the latter suffering from an illness. For 79 minutes, the Premier League clash seemed bound to end in a draw with the two clubs locked in a stalemate.

In the 80th minute, the Reds pulled ahead on an Arsenal own goal.

Luis Díaz added another goal in stoppage time to put Liverpool up 2-0 for good, establishing their Premier League supremacy by knocking the Gunners out of the FA Cup in the third round.

Seven Premier League teams in replays

Winter break is set to begin in the Premier League next week, but seven teams won't get their full breaks.

Brentford, Crystal Palace, Everton, Luton, Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Wolves were all unable to avoid a draw in the third round of FA Cup play. As a result, the seven teams will have to play replay matches next week to decide their third-round fates.

Crystal Palace drew with Everton, 0-0; Wolves and Brentford finished 1-1; and Luton Town, Nottingham Forest and West Ham all drew with teams in tiers below the Premier League: Bolton, Blackpool and Bristol City, respectively.

What are FA Cup replays?

In all rounds of the FA Cup up to and including the fourth round, teams that draw in an FA Cup match have to replay the match at a later date.

This is in contrast to the protocol for later rounds, when 30 minutes of extra time are added before penalty kicks, if necessary.

Replays for the third-round matches will take place the week of Jan. 15.
