Larry French column: Pierce, Stanton roll senior honor scores to start off 2024 strong

A couple of senior bowlers rang in the New Year with scores over 700 to highlight the action at the beginning of the 2024 portion of the current bowling season at Crystal Lanes.

Don Pierce and Bruce Stanton each tossed their third senior 700s of the season in action this past week. Don got things going in the Go-Getters Senior Mixed League with a 716 series. He showed a lot of consistency in the process with games of 238, 234 and 244. In the same league, Ken Mattison mustered a 632 series with the help of a 234 game while Mike Hughson matched that 234 on his way to a 631 series.

Bruce’s third 700 of the season came during the weekly session of the Chilson-Wilcox Senior Men’s League. After opening with a 244 effort, he blasted a 279 game. Bruce coasted home with a 190 for his 713 series.

That same league also had five guys over the 600 mark. Tim DeGraw led this quintet with a 653 that included a 245 opener. John Stermer capped a 650 set with a 255 game while Ken Mattison three-deuced his way to that same 650 mark. Dave Stutzman’s 618 and a 605 set that was capped with a 256 game by Mike Hughson completed this six-shooting quintet.

In other senior league action, Gary Gustin rode a 244 game to a 645 series to pace the Striking Seniors Mixed League, which was just a couple pins in front of John Olson’s 643 that included a 239 game.

Stefanini powers junior circuit

Over on the junior circuit, Camryn Stefanini registered his eighth 700 series of the season in the CIBA Jr./Sr. Mixed League. After a 215 opener, Cam went on a strike binge in game two with a 277 and capped the day with a 237 for a 729 series that paced all junior bowlers this week.

Three other youngsters in this league also topped six. Andrew Bauman paced the trio with a 640 total while Zachery Kathan tossed a 620 set and Zack Crown came away with a 605 series. In the Bumper League, Keaton Beckman was the only youngster over the century mark with a 108 game.

Farr blasts 777 series

Scoring honors for the week goes to houseman Chad Farr. He zeroed in on the strike zone early in the Sun Legends Grille Mixed League and spent the evening there. He kicked off the night with a 256 game and added a 245 before blasting a 276 final game for a 777 series. In the same league, Doug Madison stayed on his hot streak when he capped a 726 series with a 289 game and Josh Doan rode a 279 game to a 704 series.

Seven guys rolled out 700 scores in the Tire World of Corning Men’s League. Jamie Kennedy led this contingent when he capped a 736 set with a 289 game. Adam Madigan, on a blistering pace for the past two month, stayed the course with a 732 series while Nick Dobson tossed a 731 set. Micky Van Zile’s 716 was just ahead of Mark Ribble at the Ruthian 714 mark while Aiden Kosinski rolled a 710 series. Rick Stewart’s 701 put a cap on the seven-shooting in this league.

The only  other league with multiple 700s was the Hatfield Real Estate League. Jim Sonner’s 708 series was the pace-setter here, just ahead of the 703 by Tim DeGraw and the 701 posted by Doug Madison.

In other men’s league action, Al Farr grabbed runner-up scoring honors for the week with his 744 series in the Gary Cortright Memorial Mixed League while Dennis Costello topped the Atlas Pizzeria Mixed League with a 723 total and Rick Stewart led the Addison Men’s League with a 706 series.

There were seven ladies scores over the 600 mark this week. Gwen Bain grabbed the honors for the gals with her 650 series in the Giardina Building & Remodeling Ladies League. Gwen sandwiched a 255 game with a 191 opener and a 204 closer. In the same league, Deon Frost knocked down three deuces on her way to a 620 total.
