Lamar sweeps Texas A&M-Commerce in conference softball

COMMERCE — Texas A&M University-Commerce pitcher Destiny Martinez shut out Lamar for 5 2/3 innings before giving way in the Lions' 5-0 Southland Conference softball home loss on Saturday.
Martinez, a freshman from Denver, Colorado, kept a Lamar team that had scored 18 runs in its two previous wins over the Lions from scoring through the first five innings. The right-hander was one out away from closing out the sixth without giving up another run.
But she gave up a run-scoring double to Trinity Brandon, who took third on a throwing error. Brandon then scored on a wild pitch.
Lamar padded its lead with three runs in the seventh off an RBI single by Kalie Amos, a fielding error and then a sacrifice fly by Rose Gonzales.
Lamar pitcher Emma Wardlaw and Kryana Mitchell combined on a two-hit shutout. Wardlaw allowed both hits with five strikeouts 5 1/3 innings. Mitchell struck out one and did not give up a hit in 1 2/3 innings.
Mitchell fired a no-hitter in Lamar's 10-0 victory on Friday over the Lions. The right-hander walked one and fanned four in five innings.
Brandon, Shenita Tucker, Veronica Harrison and Raigan Brannon doubled for Lamar in that game. Tucker and Brannon both drove in three runs.
Lamar beat the Lions 8-2 in the first game of the series on Friday. Emmie Miehe drove in one run for the Lions with a double and Charli Anger drove in another run with a single.
Tucker tripled and drove in two runs for Lamar. Brandon also drove in two runs.
Tehya Pitts and Ashlynn Griffith managed the Lions' only two hits in Friday's loss.
A&M-Commerce dropped to 5-29 for the season with its 21st straight loss. The Lions are 0-9 in Southland Conference play.
Lamar improved to 21-10 for the season and 8-1 in conference play. The Cardinals are alone in first place.
The Lions are scheduled to play again at home at 6 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. Wednesday against non-conference opponent Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
