Lake Region softball ends terrific year in regional semifinals

EAGLE LAKE — It was a sensational season for the Lake Region Thunder.

But the season ended in the Class 4A regional semifinals Tuesday at Lake Region High School, as the No. 2 seed Thunder went down 11-1 to No. 3 seed EAU Gallie. The Thunder put up a run in the third inning. And defensively, Lake Region gave up 11 hits.

Lake Region’s squad declined to comment.

Still, it was a terrific season for the Thunder.

A few weeks ago, the Thunder achieved the Class 4A, District 6 championship thanks to a 6-5 win over Lake Wales thanks to all-county player Makenna Meadows singling home the winning run, which helped rally the Thunder in the bottom of the ninth.

Meadows in this game went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Kirsten Aldridge had a two-run double.

Lake Region finished the season with a 20-8 record ― the second straight 20-win season ― and the No. 14 team in the state of Florida ended its season winning seven of nine.

Meadows led the team all year with a .451 batting average, 37 hits and 19 RBIs. She also registered 133 strikeouts and a 1.01 ERA, which helped her become the Florida Athletic Coaches Association 2024 Class 4A District 6 Player of the Year.

Aldridge led the team with five home runs and 23 RBIs, while Margaret Jenkins led the squad with 24 stolen bases and 30 runs scored.
