Lake Norden, Milbank and Volga record Eastern Dakota League amateur baseball wins

OMAHA, Neb. — Watertown Post 17 opened play in the Creighton Prep American Legion Baseball Tournament by splitting two games on Wednesday.

Post 17 (21-20 on the season) opened with a 7-4 win over the Creighton Prep Five Points Bank varsity and then suffered a 2-1 loss to Wayzata, Minn.

A six-run third inning led Watertown in the opener. Drew Denzer, Carson Mutscher and Ryan Roby led the offense with two hits apiece. Denzer and Mutschler each doubled and Spencer Wientjes added a two-run single.

Justin Remmers went six innings for the win. Jack Heesch pitched the seventh for the save.

Kyle Boutwell's single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh lifted Wayzata to its win over Post 17. Boutwell finished with three hits to back the strong pitcher of Matthew Welk.

Carter Beynon had two of Watertown's six hits. Talan Jurgens went the distance in the loss.

The tourney continues through Sunday.

Aberdeen Smittys 8-7, Sioux Falls East 12-0

The Smittys (16-10) bounced back from the opening loss to earn the split of the home doubleheader on Wednesday.

Zane Backous fired a two-hit shutout for the Smittys, who got a double and a single and two RBIs from Phillip Zens. Casey Vining and Jaiden Smith each also doubled. Smith also drove in two runs.

Aberdeen led 7-2 after four innings in the opener before Sioux Falls took over with a seven-run fifth inning. Ryan Husman tallied three hits and Andrew Glovich two for East.

Smith, Zens and Drew Salfrank each had three hits and Backous and Vining two apiece for Aberdeen. Zens macked a triple and Smith two doubles. Backous, Vining and Brendan Livermont each doubled.

Aberdeen is scheduled to visit the Rapid City Post 320 Stars on Monday.

Redfield 14, Webster 2

REDFIELD — Redfield scored 14 runs in three innings and got a one-hitter from Erik Salmen in the four-inning win on Wednesday. Salmen recorded six strikeouts.

Peyton Osborn clubbed a homer and a double and drove in five runs. Keaton Rohlfs (double and triple), Camden Osborn (triple and single) and Salmen (two singles) each contributed two hits.

Matthew Mount slugged a two-run homer in the first inning for Webster.

Redfield plays Friday through Sunday in a tournament at Marshall, Minn.

Groton 6-10, Hamlin 16U 0-2

BRYANT — Groton's Legion opened the night with the 6-0 win in the opener on Wednesday.

Cade Larson notched two hits and Kaleb Hoover and Colby Dunker each doubled for Groton. Dunker also got the win on the mound, striking out eight in 5 2/3 innings.

Watson Grantham had two hits for Hamlin.

In the second game (a U16 game), Logan Ringgenberg drove in two runs with two doubles for Groton. Ted Smith and Parker Boerger each singled for Hamlin.

Hamlin visits Garretson on Thursday. Groton travels to Lake Norden on Friday.

Amateur Baseball

Lake Norden 20, Clark 2

LAKE NORDEN — Jordon Johnson, Josh Cleveland and Jackson Noem combined on a one-hitter and Lake Norden used a 13-run third inning to roll to the Eastern Dakota League win on Wednesday.

The Lakers (7-3 overall and 7-1 in the EDL) pounded out 15 hits in the five-inning win, including a grand slam homer and a run-scoring single by Mick Tulson. Kale Stevenson drove in three runs with a homer and a triple. Mitchell Noem clubbed three doubles and Johnson ands Josh Cleveland each finished with two hits. Jackson Noem hit a triple and Kevin Krumm, Cleveland and Easton Thury each doubled.

Johnson went three innings and Cleveland and J. Noem each one on the mound for the Lakers, who visit Volga on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Andrew Magedanz's single was the lone hit for Clark (6-3, 5-3), which hosts the Castlewood Monarchs on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Milbank 10, Elkton 0

MILBANK — The Firechiefs improved to 5-1 overall and in the EDL with the win on Wednesday.

Taylor Boerger led the offense with three doubles, Kaden Krause, who doubled, joined Mitch Quade, Cam May and Brady Femling with two hits apiece. Brady Krause added a triple and also struck out eight batters in five innings on the mound.

Volga 7, Castlewood Monarchs 5

CASTLEWOOD — Trevor Olson and Cole Gross each delivered run-scoring singles in the top of the 13th inning to lift the Cormorants to the EDL win on Wednesday.

Gross finished with three hits. Zach Puetz homered and joined Damien Danziesen with two hits apiece.

Matt Steffensen had three hits and Kegan Tvedt and Blayne Schliesman two each for the Monarchs (2-5 overall and in the EDL). Chris Lather went all 13 innings on the mound in the loss.
