Lady Jays go 2-2 in Wisconsin volleyball tournament last weekend

Sep. 26—MADISON, Wi. — After a five-match home stretch, the Lady Jays volleyball team went on the road last weekend for four matches in Wisconsin.

Minnesota West (16-6, 7-1 Minnesota College Athletic Conference) went 2-2 in its four matches at the Madison College Tournament. Here is a recap of the four matches.

Minnesota West 3, Milwaukee Area Technical College 2

Minnesota West's first match of the tournament was on Friday and it went the distance, with the Lady Jays coming out on top 15-10 in the fifth game.

The first three games were tight, with all three decided by four points or less. The Lady Jays lost game one to the Stormers 25-22 before rebounding to win the second 25-21. With the match deadlocked at 1-1, the Lady Jays took a crucial third game 25-23. The Stormers however avoided the loss by winning game four 25-18.

Their chances at a 2-1 comeback fell short and the Lady Jays held on to win.

Three Lady Jay players finished in double figures in kills. Ells Hesse led both sides with 18, Kiarra Danielson totaled 14 and Hattie DeVries added 13. Shawna Rogers and Lexi Schreurs each finished with 18 digs while Danielson had 17 and Hesse 15. Schreurs also had 50 set assists, the second most she's had this season.

Kat Polzine finished with seven kills and three service aces and Hesse and Schreurs each had an ace on serve. Minnesota West didn't have a single service error in the match.

Madison College 3, Minnesota West 0

The Lady Jays played another match Friday, against a tough Madison College opponent.

The Wolfpack are a Division II team in the NJCAA and are currently ranked 14th in the D2 rankings. They showed their talent in a 3-0 win over Minnesota West by game scores of 25-15, 25-15, 25-17.

Hesse finished with six kills for Minnesota West, DeVries and Danielson each had four and Polzine and Maya Doyen each added three.

Shawna Rogers led in digs with nine, Hesse totaled eight and Schreurs added seven along with 18 set assists.

Spoon River College 3, Minnesota West 1

After playing two matches Friday, the Lady Jays played two more on Saturday, starting with this one against Spoon River College.

Minnesota West won the first game 25-20 before SRC won the next three 25-18, 25-19, 25-15 to close out the match.

Hesse finished with 17 kills and 25 digs for the Lady Jays and Ella Kamrud added 10 kills and DeVries nine. Rogers got 32 digs, tied for the most by her this season, Danielson had 22, Schreurs had 12 and Courtney Moser had 11. Schreurs also finished with 44 set assists and Danielson served the only two aces of the match for Minnesota West. Lyric Edgerle led both teams in kills with 22 for SRC.

Minnesota West 3, Bryant & Stratton College 1

The Lady Jays finished their Wisconsin trip on a positive note, winning in four games to finish the weekend with a 2-2 record.Minnesota West rebounded after dropping the first game 25-19. They won the next three games 25-16, 25-19, 25-23 to seal the victory.

Up next for Minnesota West is a matchup with Rochester Technical and Community College Wednesday before heading back home for a match Friday night with Anoka-Ramsey Community College.
