La Salle, NK, Chariho earn tennis title spots; plus the rest of Tuesday's spooky playoff action

PROVIDENCE – Another title is within reach for the La Salle girls tennis team.

It wasn’t easy, but the Rams took care of business in Tuesday’s semifinal against Moses Brown, as No. 3 Abigail Oxley pulled out a three-set win to give La Salle a 4-1 win to earn a spot in Saturday’s state final and give the program a chance at its 10th straight state title.

Abigail Oxley came up clutch for the La Salle girls tennis team Tuesday, pulling out a three-set win to earn the clinching point in the Rams' 4-1 win over North Kingstown in their Division I semifinal.

While the 4-1 win looks like a breeze he match could have been flipped around had Oxley not have completed her comeback at No. 3.

The Rams started fast, with Samantha Holoubek and Emily Roye earning the first point at No. 2 doubles with the No. 1 doubles team of Eliza Barker and Alisha Chowdhry coming right after. Arianna DeThomas made it 3-0 after her straight sets win at No. 2, but Moses Brown picked up a point at No. 4 with a win from Phoebe Kinnell.

Oxley had dropped her first set against Ronia Dhillon at No. 3, but came back strong in the second set. With the match at No. 1 between La Salle’s Bridget Casey and MB’s Adriana Eaton in a third set and the No. 3 doubles match between La Salle’s Genevieve Raposo and Megha Sud and Moses Brown’s Ella Maher-Santarpia and Caroline O’Neill also headed to a third, it was clear Oxley’s match could be the difference between getting to Slater Park and not.

In the third, Oxley maintained her momentum and finished off the 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win to clinch the title berth.

Division I semifinals

North Kingstown 4, Barrington 2

The Skippers won two matches in singles an two in doubles, earning the program’s first trip to the state championship match after a 4-2 win over the Eagles.

North Kingstown’s depth provided the points it needed. The No. 2 doubles team of Hannah Fries and Addison Ralphs and the No. 3 team of Bridget McPhillips and Olivia Soucy were straight sets winners helping the Skippers pick up two quick points.

Barrington earned a point at No. 1 with a win by Ava Koczera-Kasem, but North’s grabbed three-set victories from Kate Maloney at No. 2 and Bonnie O’Flaherty at No. 3 to close out the match. Maddi Cameron added a win at No. 3 singles but the score did not count toward the total.

North Kingstown moves on to Saturday’s state championship match against La Salle. While the program has played for Division II and Class B championships – winning that title in 1992 – it has never played in the state championship match.
