Get to know each of the 49ers’ 14 undrafted rookies

The 49ers on Monday announced 14 undrafted additions to their 2022 rookie class.

While the UDFAs don’t get the pomp and circumstance of the draftees, the 49ers have shown during the Kyle Shanahan era that they’re capable of getting production from players overlooked in the draft.

It’s easy to see how some players in this year’s UDFA class could figure into the mix this season and beyond. San Francisco added a handful of players at positions that went unaddressed in the draft, so the 2022 UDFA group will have a real chance to make an impact if they perform well in training camp.

Let’s take a quick look at all 14 players the 49ers added after the draft:

DL Kevin Atkins, Fresno State

Weight: 314

College stats: 47 games, 141 tackles, 31 TFLs, 16.5 sacks

Note: There’ll be opportunities on the interior of the defensive line, especially if Atkins can push the pocket a little as a pass rusher.

LB Jeremiah Gemmel, North Carolina

Weight: 226

College stats: 37 games, 235 tackles, 20 TFLs, 6.5 sacks, 3 INTs, 9 PBUs

Note: Gemmel may wind up playing safety given his size.

S Tayler Hawkins, San Diego State

College stats: 46 games, 169 tackles, 5 TFLs, 3 INTs, 18 PBUs

Note: Played cornerback and safety for the Aztecs. Versatility could help him have staying power in San Francisco.

Note: Knight spent six years in college and spent three at Maryland, one at Kent State, and two at UCLA.

WR Taysir Mack, Pittsburgh

Note: His best year was in 2019 when he posted 63 catches for 736 yards and three touchdowns.

WR Tay Martin, Oklahoma State

Note: Mack had a career-high 10 touchdowns in 2021. He matched that with a career-high 10 drops.

Note: Best season was in 2019 when he posted 899 yards and seven touchdowns on 172 carries.

Note: Clocked a 4.49 in the 40-yard dash. Played at Indiana for 6 seasons after sitting out 2020.

Note: Spent time at three schools in three years before landing at San Diego State for 2020 and 2021. Played LB and safety for a good Aztecs defense.

Note: Poe is undersized, but a good athlete who could find a nice fit in Kyle Shanahan’s scheme.

Note: May not have the versatility to move inside and only played tackle in college.

Note: His best chance to stand out is by making plays in the passing game, which he didn’t do much of in college.

Note: Spent time at both guard spots and center for the Sun Devils with 14 at center, 11 at right guard and four at left guard.
