Kiwanis Festival Day 2 roundup: Century/JM wins again, sets up championship game Friday vs. Eagan

Dec. 28—(Editor's note: This roundup will be updated throughout the day, as Festival games are completed.)

A year after Rochester Century and John Marshall both went winless at the Kiwanis Festival, the first-year Century/JM co-op is a win away from hoisting the championship trophy.

The Panthers' 4-2 victory against Fargo South/Shanley on Thursday night gives Century/JM a 10-1-0 overall record this season and a 2-0-0 mark at the Kiwanis Festival. The Panthers will meet fellow tournament unbeaten Eagan at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Graham Arena I. The winner will win the Gold Division championship.

"You tell the guys, you only get 25 (games) a year and you try to minimize them as each one being important," Century/JM co-head coach Matt Erredge said, "but if there's a trophy involved, I think it's going to be a little extra for us to play for and hopefully we're up to the task."

Eagan is new to the Festival this year. Century last won a Kiwanis championship in 2019, the second of a back-to-back run for the Panthers. JM's only Festival title came in 1997.

Thursday, Century/JM built an early lead against South/Shanley — the defending state champion in North Dakota — and made it hold up.

"One of the things you talk about when you play in this tournament is playing different teams," Erredge said, "and we're getting three good suburban teams. The idea is to start building our identity as a team that can win all types of games. We can win close games, we can finish games if we're up. We can come from behind, but from the get-go tonight I think we just had a good energy and a good effort to start. That's been key for us, a good first period leading to a good game."

Kyle Lappi made 27 saves in goal to earn his ninth win of the year and second in as many days.

The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the opening period on late goals from Brock Clarey (on a power play) and Ole Fevold, both coming in the final 2:40 of the first.

The Bruins cut their deficit in half on an Aaron Meyer power-play goal three minutes into the second, but Century/JM answered. Aiden Emerich scored with 1:08 to play in the second to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead after two.

Bennett Pronk scored his fifth goal of the season 3:26 into the third to extend the Panthers' lead to 4-1. Clarey and Emerich both had a goal and an assist for Century/JM, while sophomore forward Calvin O'Reilly had two assists, one on both of the Panthers' first-period goals.

"Calvin has a really good hockey IQ," Century/JM co-head coach Josh Klingfus said. "He's learning a lot from (linemates) Ole and Brock, so that helps a lot, playing with two veteran guys who got a lot of ice time for JM last year. They're kind of showing him the way and he's fit in really nicely on that line."

South/Shanley (5-5-0 overall) pulled back within two on a Adrian Fillipi goal three minutes later, but that was all the offense the Bruins could manage against Century/JM's defense and Lappi.

South/Shanley closes tournament play at 2 p.m. Friday against Dodge County.

"Our depth showed up tonight, we played a good 200-foot game," Erredge said. "Even though we gave up a goal on the penalty kill, we were really good on the kill. The guys had a lot of energy for a second game in two days and we have to bring it again tomorrow."
