Kirk Cousins Needs To Get Paid Now, Not Later

Here we are in February and we do not have quarterback Kirk Cousins under a contract. Versus the Dallas Cowboys, Kirk Cousins was right at 450 yards passing, 3 touchdown and zero interceptions in the loss. We lost that game and other games that cost us the NFC East and playoffs because of our defense and red-zone play-calling, not because of quarterback Kirk Cousins.

In 2017, we have a quarterback who is in the Top 8 in the NFL, but no long term contract yet. Kirk Cousins has not missed a start in two seasons as he has played all 16 games in 2015 and 2016. He is tough, durable, and anyone can see how he has improved and gets better and better. He hasn’t even reached his potential yet. We need to get him signed and have consistency at the quarterback position.

If we lose him and start over with a new quarterback, we will be set back 3 or 4 years again. Yes Colt McCoy knows the system and is a good quarterback but he is injury prone and cannot hold up under the tough 16 game schedule. He is a great backup and we are fortunate to have him as our number 2 quarterback behind Kirk Cousins.

Kirk has thrown over 4,000 yards in 2015 and 2016. PAY THE MAN and hurry up before other NFL teams can offer him the farm. I am sure Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay would love to have Kirk Cousins leading their 49ers and Rams. I can think of a dozen other teams who need Kirk Cousins also.

Sometimes because a man is a devout Christian and does not brag, showboat, curse, drink and talk alot of nonsense fans think he is weak. Cousins is more competitive than most. His persona is like that of Joe Gibbs. Honorable, trustworthy, clean, honest, intelligent, job knowledge, and wants to win and willing to work hard and study and get better. He gives others the credit, not himself. He takes the heat, responsibility, and not throw teammates or coaches under the bus.

I am not going to criticize or second guess GM Scot McCloughan and President Bruce Allen about not signing Kirk Cousins in 2015, or 2016, but they need to get him signed now in my opinion. Then we can deal with the NFL Draft, defense spots that need to be filled via Free Agency and left guard position. We also will see what our Redskins leadership does with Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson, other free agents. To me Free Agency should be targeted on Nose Tackle and Safety if we can get an All Pro free agent in those two spots, plus a good defensive NFL Draft for depth and training. In my view, D-Line and a true Safety should be our 17th pick in the First Round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Good news is our Washington Redskins in 2017 are not that far away from being a championship caliber team. A few players here and there and BOOM, right back taking the NFC East and being one of the top teams in the NFL. I have confidence in our offense and hope our defense will be able to hold teams to 20 points or less per game in 2017.

I am going on record as believing Junior Galette will make our 2017 team and help our pass-rush and defense. Too many near misses, just a second more and sack time, just a second faster pass-rush would have made a big difference in 3rd down stops in 2015 and 2016. I know in my knower he will defy the odds and will overcome those injuries he had last two seasons. It is the fight inside the dog that matters and he has that, plus Faith in GOD, so I am believing he will prevail, overcome, and make us proud he is a Washington Redskins. Time will tell.

It is going to be an exciting and interesting “off-season.”
