Kinnick Diaries: Iowa at Penn State Week 4 live blog

The Iowa Hawkeyes’ Big Ten season kicks off tonight with a massive matchup at No. 7 Penn State.

After wins over Utah State, Iowa State and Western Michigan, tonight is the chance to show the country that the Hawkeyes are for real about challenging in both the Big Ten West and overall league race.

It’s Week 4 as Iowa invades Beaver Stadium attempting to spoil Penn State’s White Out! As always, follow along below with our live blog for today’s contest. Remember to refresh the page to keep up with the current updates as they roll in.

Just that kind of night

Thanks, CBS

Really appreciate the update, CBS. It was a McNamara fumble where he was hit and stripped by defensive end Chop Robinson.

Warren Again

When it rains, it pours indeed. Allar finds Warren again for a 7-yard touchdown strike. With that touchdown, Penn State extends its lead to 24-0.

Make it five in a row

Make it five three-and-outs in a row. Just brutal. The Iowa offense can do absolutely nothing against Penn State.

White Out Warren wastes no time

Penn State’s first drive of the second half is a gut punch. A time-consuming, 15-play, 75-yard drive that ends with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Allar to tight end Tyler Warren. It was also the Nittany Lions’ fourth drive of 10 or more plays on the night as the defense continues to get gassed.

Halftime numbers... yikes

Iowa’s first half numbers were…ugly. After Erick All’s fumble, Iowa ended the first half with four straight three-and-outs offensively. The Hawkeyes had just 63 yards of total offense and a pair of first downs.

Fortunately, the defense did what it typically does, which was to limit a talented Penn State offense to just 162 yards and 10 points after a pair of Iowa turnovers. The Hawkeyes also forced four punts.

No facemask?

The final drive of the first half for Iowa ends with a facemark of McNamara that went unflagged. A 62-yard punt from Tory Taylor that’s downed at the Penn State 1-yard line effectively ends the first half.

Can't catch a break

After the two teams trade punts, the Hawkeyes’ punt is muffed but the Penn State returner has the football carom back to him. The Hawkeye defense responds, headlined by a great play from linebacker Nick Jackson flying downhill to stuff Nick Singleton for a loss of five.

Another three-and-out

After Penn State’s 9-yard touchdown pass, Iowa responds with another three-and-out.

Penn State gamble is paid off

Penn State gambles on 4th-and-1 from the Iowa 9-yard line and is rewarded with a Drew Allar touchdown pass to Khalil Dinkins to grab a 10-0 lead. It looked like maybe Allar had been stopped short on a previous 4th-and-1 on the drive, but the Nittany Lions were awarded the first down by the nose of the football.

Special teams blunder

After Iowa’s defense forces Penn State into a three-and-out, a rare special teams miscue sets the Nittany Lions up in business. The Penn State punt hits the back of gunner Brenden Deasfernandes who wasn’t looking for it.

Iowa offense responds with a quick 3-and-out

After a short completion to Nico Ragaini and a run by Kamari Moulton brings up a third-and-manageable, Iowa and Cade McNamara can’t deliver. McNamara just throws it away and the Hawkeyes’ third possession ends with a three-and-out and punting situation.

Iowa bends, but doesn't break

Penn State’s second drive is much better than its first. A 17-play, 53-yard drive gets killed by a holding penalty, though. The Iowa defense does its job, bending but not breaking and limiting Penn State to a 46-yard field goal from Alex Felkins.

Iowa's second drive ends with a costly turnover

Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz dialed up a shovel pass to tight end Erick All that worked beautifully. That is, until it didn’t. All took the shovel pass into the red zone but was upended and fumbled as he flipped over.

Penn State took over at its own 18-yard line.

Iowa's defense delivers!

Tory Taylor’s punt following Iowa’s opening drive backed Penn State up to its own 5-yard line. From there, the Nittany Lions went backwards. Talented running back Kaytron Allen lost two yards on each of Penn State’s first two plays from scrimmage. A short completion netted a punting situation.

Iowa's first drive stalls out

Iowa’s first drive featured a nice opening third-down conversion to tight end Erick All that went for 20 yards, but it stalled after a 1-yard run to Leshon Williams and a pair of completions.

Welcome to the White Out

Under the lights in Happy Valley

It's beautiful
