Kills, digs and aces: Vote for IHSAA volleyball players of the week (Aug. 21-26)

IndyStar will be recognizing the top volleyball players in Indiana with our players of the week poll.

Hank's Volleyball Headlines: Another D-1 commit for HSE, Cathedral's learning curve, more

Congratulations to Hamilton Heights' Kennedy Cherry on being voted Player of the Week for Aug. 12-19! The recent Western Kentucky commit recorded 58 receptions with only three errors and cleared double-digit digs four times through her first six matches (all Huskies sweeps). Cherry had 61 digs, seven aces and nine assists entering the weekend.

Here are the top performers from the past week.

MacKenzie Bieker, Edinburgh

The senior was very busy on defense this week, picking up 91 digs and 11 blocks over four matches. Her week was highlighted by a 26-dig, six-block performance in a three-set win over Morristown and a 30-dig effort against Martinsville.

Natalie Bollenbacher, Scecina

Bollenbacher had 46 assists (9.2 per set) in a five-set loss to Speedway. She also picked up 13 digs, a block and two aces. She tallied an ace, 15 digs and 25 assists earlier in the week vs. Heritage Christian.

Isabelle Brown, Avon

The junior setter cleared 30 assists in back-to-back matches, notching 39 in a four-set win over Tri-West and 35 in a sweep of Carmel. She capped her week with 27 assists against Noblesville. Brown also logged six kills, five aces, eight blocks and 18 digs over those three matches. Fun fact: Avon finished off the sweep of Carmel by taking the third set, 31-29.

Journee Brown, Seymour

The senior played in five matches this week, totaling 51 kills and six blocks. She had 20 kills and hit .333 in a five-set loss to Columbus East.

Raegan Durbin, Western Boone

Durbin had two matches this week. She collected 27 kills, an ace and 13 digs in a five-set loss to Zionsville, then picked up 26 kills (.432 hit%), three aces, two blocks, four digs and an assist in a 3-1 win over Covenant Christian. She has 133 kills and is hitting .377 through 23 sets (seven matches).

Azure Flagle, New Palestine

The sophomore defensive specialist had 38 digs and seven assists in a reverse sweep of Hamilton Heights. She also totaled nine aces, 27 digs and three assists in three-set sweeps of Greenwood Christian Academy and Whiteland.

Mya Grigsby, Greenfield-Central

Grigbsy continued her strong start to the season, tallying 12 kills and hitting .414 against Richmond, and 18 kills and hitting .378 vs. Eastern Hancock. She also registered five assists, 12 digs (all vs. Richmond) and four assists between the two matches. The Panthers are 8-0.

Maddie Lynch, Plainfield

The senior shined amidst a 2-1 week for the Quakers, scoring 52 kills (19 on .395 hitting vs. Brownsburg), five aces, eight blocks (six vs. Center Grove), 35 digs (17 vs. CG) and 33 assists (19 vs. Brownsburg). Plainfield is 7-2 on the year.

Lilly Stanton, Westfield

Stanton finished with 33 assists in a five-set win over Pendleton Heights on Monday. That was the first of seven matches for the Rocks senior, who accumulated 111 assists (only four ballhandling errors), 32 digs, a block, three aces and four kills for the week. Westfield finished 4-3.

Kennedy Urban, Franklin Community

Urban has cleared 30 assists in four of her first five matches, all Franklin wins. She had 30 against Franklin Central, 28 vs. Decatur Central and 36 vs. Trinity Lutheran last week. The five-set win over Trinity Lutheran also included 19 digs and two kills.

Mariana Van Der Aa, Bloomfield

The sophomore had a career night against Bedford North Lawrence, racking up 32 kills with a .394 hit%. She also scored three aces, 16 digs and an assist in the Cardinals' five-set win (their first win of the season).

Charlotte Vinson, Yorktown

The IU commit racked up 90 kills over five matches, with 30 in a five-set win over Delta. She also logged seven aces, six blocks, 28 digs and three assists during that stretch, and cleared 1,000 career kills in the first set of a 2-0 win over Crown Point.

McKenna Wilken, Brebeuf Jesuit

Wilken put down 35 kills over three matches (11 sets) last week, and hit over .300 against both Chatard and Heritage Christian. She also had a block and seven digs. The junior has 81 kills for the season.
