History was made in south Georgia on Sept. 2.

During the Valdosta State Blazers football game against Point University, McCall Bennett became the first female football player in school history. Bennett kicked an extra point in the middle of the fourth quarter, making her also the first female to score points for the Valdosta State program, according to VSU Athletics social media.

According to VSU assistant athletic director for communications Kit Strief, Bennett's history making kick happened under unusual circumstances as the game was played in a stadium without power after Hurricane Idalia damaged much of the area just days before.

Valdosta State, where UGA football coach Kirby Smart started his coaching career, plays Albany State on this Saturday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. The Blazers have won four Division II national championships in the last 20 years: 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2018.
