Key takeaways from Corpus Christi high school softball as district play heats up

With the district season upon us, here are some takeaways as March winds down.

The South Zone in District 29-5A is shaping up about as expected as Veterans Memorial, Carroll and Flour Bluff look like the likely zone playoff participants. Now all that’s likely left is the seeding.

The North Zone, meanwhile, could be more interesting. Victoria East’s victory against Victoria West on Tuesday jumbled up the standings with Gregory-Portland and Victoria West tied for first at 2-1, but even Miller at 0-2 is still in it.

Race is on in 30-4A

Ingleside and Rockport-Fulton have jumped out to 4-0 starts in 30-4A with Mustangs set to face Sinton on Friday. This could be an interesting race as Ingleside, Rockport-Fulton, Sinton and early-season district favorite Port Lavaca Calhoun may need a coin or some extra games to determine seeding later this eason.

It’s Calallen and everybody else in 31-4A

The Wildcats have turned on the jets in March and are not looking back, and are showing to be the prohibitive favorite in 31-4A. But the race behind them could be interesting. Robstown defeated Tuloso-Midway last week, and then Alice topped the Lady Pickers. Mix in Bishop and of those four teams, one team may be left home come playoff time. Like their baseball counterparts, all games seem to be of added importance in that district.

Short hops

• London’s win against Hebbronville puts the Pirates in a solid position to keep pace with Santa Gertrudis Academy in 30-3A. The two squads will meet on March 25.

• Looks like the squads in 31-2A will be chasing Three Rivers early in the season. The Bulldogs are 3-0 in district and are a stellar 20-3 overall this season. Those three losses have come to Mathis, Goliad and Gonzales.
