Kentucky baseball vs Oregon State score updates in NCAA super regional bracket Game 2

LEXINGTON — Kentucky baseball needs a win Sunday to reach the College World Series for the first time in program history. Oregon State requires a victory to simply stay alive another day.

The Wildcats rolled to a 10-0 win in Game 1 of the NCAA Tournament's Lexington Super Regional series on Saturday, handing the Beavers their first shutout of the season. It was UK's first-ever win in a super regional game.

Oregon State won't make it easy on Kentucky in Game 2, though. In their eight prior super regional appearances, the Beavers only have sufferd one sweep.

Mason Moore, a junior from Morehead, likely will get the starting nod Sunday. Moore has never allowed a run in the NCAA Tournament, tossing 20 ⅓ scoreless innings in his career. His counterpart likely will be Jacob Kmatz, who is 7-2 for Oregon State this season. Kmatz boasts a 3.29 earned run average with a team-high 88 strikeouts (against just 20 walks).

FINAL: Kentucky 3, Oregon State 2

AFTER TOP OF NINTH INNING IN NCAA LEXINGTON SUPER REGIONAL: Kentucky 3, Oregon State 2

A 1-2-3 inning for the UK batsmen. But it's the bottom of the ninth that counts with UK needing only three outs for victory.

AFTER BOTTOM OF EIGHTH INNING IN NCAA LEXINGTON SUPER REGIONAL: Kentucky 3, Oregon State 2

UK pitcher Robert Hogan walked a batter, but was stout otherwise as Oregon State failed to score. Kentucky now is three outs away from clinching a spot in the College World Series.

Three straight outs for the Wildcats' offense. Kentucky continues to cling to a one-run lead.

AFTER BOTTOM OF SEVENTH INNING IN NCAA LEXINGTON SUPER REGIONAL: Kentucky 3, Oregon State 2

The Beavers notched a leadoff single and had runners at the corners with one out. But pitcher Robert Hogan got out of the jam, striking out Travis Bazzana and getting Micah McDowell to line out for the Wildcats to escape the inning with no damage done.

Kentucky retakes the lead in bizarre circumstances: Grant Smith struck out swinging, but reached first on a wild pitch. Oregon State pitcher Nelson Keljo forgets to cover home plate. All the while, Nolan McCarthy, standing on second after a leadoff double, motored around the bases and dived to touch home plate with Keljo out of position for a potential tag. UK didn't score again, but it's back on top by a run.

AFTER BOTTOM OF SIXTH INNING IN NCAA LEXINGTON SUPER REGIONAL: Kentucky 2, Oregon State 2

Cameron O'Brien continues going through Oregon State's lineup like a buzzsaw. He has another 1-2-3 inning and has sat down all eight batters he's faced since coming on in relief with one out in the fourth.

For the second straight inning, UK goes down in consecutive order. The game remains tied at 2-apiece.

UK's offense never gets off the ground in the top of the fifth, going three up and three down.

AFTER BOTTOM OF FOURTH INNING IN NCAA LEXINGTON SUPER REGIONAL: Kentucky 2, Oregon State 2

A rare error by shortstop Grant Smith loaded the bases for Oregon State with no outs. Mason Moore struck out the next batter, Elijah Hainline, but then walked Wilson Weber to bring in the Beavers' first run. (It marked the first run Moore had ever permitted in an NCAA Tournament game.) He then walked Brady Kasper to allow OSU to knot the game at 2-all.

After that, the Wildcats called on star reliever Cameron O'Brien. He immediately struck out both batters he faced — Trent Caraway and Mason Guerra — to end the inning.

Nolan McCarthy helps UK draw first blood, doubling down the left-field line to score Ryan Nicholson, who reached on a single.

Kentucky vs Oregon State prediction

Oregon State 5, Kentucky 4: The Beavers are 8-6 this season following a loss. Mitch Canham is 39-33 after setbacks in five seasons as Oregon State's coach. It's a proud, national title-winning program. Only once in eight previous super regional appearances has Oregon State bowed out in a sweep; that was in 2011, to eventual national semifinalist Vanderbilt. UK has played remarkably well of late, winning its past three games by a combined score of 16-1. As uber-talented as the Beavers are, though, it's hard to foresee them making the long trip from Corvallis, Oregon, and leaving without a victory. Expect a nail-biter Sunday night. But with the Beavers fighting to keep their season alive, the visitors will force the teams to return Monday for a winner-take-all Game 3.
