Thursday

Mamaroneck 9, Rye 7

Mamaroneck came to play.

The Tigers worked over a well-regarded defense in the opening half, built a comfortable lead and hung on tight, posting a 9-7 win over Rye.

It’s not a traditional rivalry game, but there is serious heat.

“Coming into this game we’ve had a rocky road, we lost a game we thought we could’ve won against New Canaan and we know how good we can be,” Mamaroneck attackman Luke Brennan said. “A lot those guys are committed (to play Division I in college) so we came out here with something to prove.”

The Tigers were three steps ahead on every possession and led 8-3 at the intermission.

Carson Miller and Tripp Redd scored early goals to get the Garnets started, but they had no answer once Brian Auker broke through for Mamaroneck.

Rye countered after the break and got within 8-6 on a Carson Miller goal with 6:09 to go in the third. There were opportunities to close the gap even more, but mistakes along with a hyper-aggressive Tigers defense haunted the Garnets.

Brennan scored the only Mamaroneck goal in the second half with 1:58 to play, but that was plenty.

“After halftime they came out ready to play,” Brennan added. “Bodies were flying on both ends. We knew we had to come out with some grit.”

What it means

It’s going to be a couple more weeks before we know everyone’s name, but Mamaroneck has playmakers at both ends. There’s a nice mix of youth and experience. If these guys are that motivated every game, the effort will overshadow any shortcomings.

“I think we’re improving game to game,” Tigers close defender Brady Rogoff said. “Sometimes the adversity is good for us. The fact that we can keep building on it helps. In the third quarter, we face a lot of adversity, and we still were able to come together and finish the job.”

Rye was reminded that it’s not strong enough offensively to overcome a lethargic start.

Player of the game

Rogoff was busy in the second half, covering all the angles and barking direction to fired-up teammates.

Tuesday

Somers 10, Lakeland/Panas 5

People are watching.

And for those who haven’t checked in on Somers yet, these guys are legitimate contenders in Class B this season. The Tuskers put the brakes on a patient Lakeland/Panas rally on Tuesday and got away in a hurry, posting a 10-5 win.

They do like to play fast, but realize the situation often dictates pace.

“I think in the beginning of this game we did a really good job of that, balancing pace of play and possession,” first-year head coach Jordan Hirsch said.

The Rebels held the ball for long stretches but were in a 5-0 hole before they broke through. It got interesting once Kyle Gallagher capped a four-goal run for Lakeland/Panas with 2:48 to go in the third and made it a one-possession game.

Miguel Iglesias answered before the quarter ended and Mason Kelly made it a 7-4 advantage early in the fourth. Lakeland/Panas got a last-gasp score from Michael Ahlstedt, but the Tuskers responded with three unanswered goals to close out the win.

“We come to practice each day wanting to work and you can feel the energy in the games,” Somers goalie Landon Pepe said. “We’re pushing transition. We’re playing fast. That’s the big difference.”

What it means

Somers and Yorktown have to meet with a Section 1 Class B title on the line. It would be a classic matchup. It would be good for the game. A lot of lacrosse fans would pay to see these rivals go head-to-head again in a win-or-go-home meeting with the bleachers on both sides of Murphy Field overflowing.

Player of the game

It’s going to be hard to send these guys home if Matt Mayfield keeps winning faceoffs.

Rye 11, John Jay 9

There needs to be a sequel.

John Jay found a little more time and space than most against the highly-touted Rye defense, but the Garnets came up with just enough timely stops to post an 11-9 win Tuesday in the logical preview of the Section 1 Class C title game.

Time will tell.

Justin Shapiro knotted the score 9-9 with 5:29 to go, but the Wolves didn't have much to celebrate the rest of the way. Carson Miller broke the deadlock a minute later and Tucker Hess fed Henry Shoemaker for an insurance goal with 2:44 to play.

"I think it's really important to make a statement now," Hess said. "We came into the season thinking we were going to be a powerhouse and then had a bit of a slow start. The defense held us together while the offense worked on putting the ball in the cage. Tonight, even though it was a close game, I think we really showed what our offense can do and how dangerous we really are."

What it means

If this continues, Rye is going to have a high degree of confidence on the offensive end before the month is over. There were a number of important goals scored in this game by newcomers.

"Obviously we had a really nice offense by the end of last year, but we lost a bunch of those guys and it feels like an entirely new offense," Hess said. "It feels like everyone is developing really, really fast. It's great looking around and seeing guys I know can put one in the net when we need them to."

Player of the game

Hess remains a creative facilitator, but he isn't shy about driving to the cage with purpose and finishing with power.
