Iona Prep 14, Bronxville 7

Iona Prep was in a mood.

After taking a moment to reflect on a humbling loss to Don Bosco the previous evening, the Gaels on Monday dialed up the intensity and hung a 14-7 loss on Bronxville.

There were some miscues, but nothing was left to chance.

“It was definitely a gut-wrenching loss, demoralizing in a sense, but I really think we learned a lot from it,” Iona Prep sophomore midfielder Tim Plunkett said. “We had to come out here with a completely different attitude and be a completely different team and start a new chapter. I think we all took it to heart and came out with a ton of energy. I think we were highly composed as well and played good offense.”

Yep.

The goals were coming from every angle. It might’ve been worse, but UNC signee Luke Arrighi made a number of highlight saves for the Broncos.

“Don Bosco is a really good team stacked with really good players and they took it to us from the very first whistle,” Gaels head coach Rick Trizano said. “We just were unprepared. We’re coming off a really good season and our kids didn’t realize you have to work every single minute of every single game.”

Iona Prep was up 10-2 in the opening minutes of second half but didn’t slam the door. Bronxville went on a 4-1 run to stave off a potentially embarrassing loss.

"We’re young," Bronxville coach Joe Haven said. "We have great senior leadership, but for these boys it’s their third new coaching system in three years so we’re all trying to get used to each other. Practices have been vibrant and upbeat and they are putting in the effort that will help us down the road. We start the season off with five or six really tough teams, but our kids like competition. Iona Prep stuck it to us today, but the kids hung in there. It was 9-2 at one point so I got a little nervous. Doing what they did against Luke is something else."

What it means

Iona Prep is back on track, but there is a lot of young talent on this roster and the Gaels are missing Dylan Reese, a senior captain and reliable finisher who suffered an injury Thursday in New Jersey. Occasionally, the inexperience shows, especially on the defensive end.

“Dylan is a great captain and there is something about him that can’t be replaced, but we’re going to face adversity this season and we have to power through it,” Haggerty said.

Player of the game

The defense went into help mode every time Plunkett had the ball.

Thursday

Rye 9, Victor 4

The expectations were high when Rye stepped on the field to face nationally ranked Victor.

Now they’re even higher.

The Garnets scored five unanswered third-quarter goals and rolled to a 9-4 win over the Blue Devils, who came in No. 13 on the USA Lacrosse Magazine Public High School National Top 25 list.

“We’re ready,” junior pole Chris Iuliano said. “We’re really ready.”

James Lewis sparked the comeback win, forcing a turnover, collecting the ground ball at midfield and feeding Tripp Redd, who made it a 3-3 game with 11.9 seconds to go in the opening half.

Next came five unanswered third-quarter goals.

“I think we had a good start,” junior midfielder Tyler McDermott said. “The second quarter we slowed up a bit, kinda forgot to play our game, but the second half we came out firing and got back to it. … We know we have big things ahead. It’s huge to win a game like this, it gives us great confidence, but also the fire that comes from knowing we can beat a nationally ranked team. We have great things ahead and we can do more.”

What it means

Rye is not an inexperienced team, but there are four underclassmen playing critical roles and they did not blink. That’s a positive sign. In order to be successful against the level of competition this team will face moving forward, the Garnets will need Carson Miller, Henry Shoemaker, Garrett Sullivan and Wilson Redd to keep doing what they did against Victor.

Player of the game

Shoemaker didn’t have any issues handling the heavy traffic. The sophomore midfielder sparked the decisive 6-0 run when he legged in for his second goal of the game.

Yorktown 8, John Jay-Cross River 7 OT

Gianluca Marchini enjoyed the moment.

The sophomore midfielder sent everybody home with an overtime goal Thursday, lifting Yorktown to an 8-7 victory over John Jay-Cross River.

“It was awesome,” Marchini said. “This is such a great rivalry. I had a pole on me the whole game. I brought him down, rolled back, came up at the hashes, shot it and hoped it would go in. Best thing ever. Best thing ever.”

There were four ties and three lead changes in the second half.

Luca Duva rattled in his fifth goal of the game to give the Wolves a 6-5 edge with 2:09 to go in the third, but long stick midfielder Chris Constantine netting the equalizer in transition with 35 seconds left in the quarter. Drew Weissman had the Huskers up 7-6, but Jon Altneu knotted the score with 1:52 to go in regulation.

“At the end of the day, we’re going to play a lot of big games like this because of the way our schedule is put together,” Constantine said. “There are some little things we need to do better, but we’re only three games in so we’ll build on things we’ve done well.”

 What it means

The Huskers are not built to win shootouts. It starts on the defensive end, and rightly so with this group. Get used to the drama. There are going to be more one-possession games. The Wolves are smart with the ball and were able to possess for long stretches, which is going to keep them in every game against highly-competitive teams.

Player of the game

Constantine was dead-ending possessions on the one end and scoring goals on the other.
