Kansas City Chiefs decline 5th year option on former LSU RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire
Former LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire will officially be entering a contract year in 2023.
Ahead of his fourth season, the Kansas City Chiefs declined to pick up the fifth-year option for the former 2020 first-round pick. That means that Edwards-Helaire is set to become a free agent next offseason.
A national champion at LSU as a key member of the 2019 squad, Edwards-Helaire had a productive rookie season in 2020 but has battled injuries throughout his career and is yet to register a full season.
He played just 10 games in 2022 before he was placed on injured reserve in November. Edwards-Helaire finished the season with 302 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 71 carries, all career lows. He did manage three touchdowns through the air, however.
Edwards-Helaire’s future with the Chiefs is unclear, especially given the emergence of Isiah Pacheco down the stretch last fall. It will likely take a major bounce-back season to earn a second contract with the team.
