Kaitlyn Zugay, Connor Kunze voted the Ames Tribune's female and male Athletes of the Week
Ballard girls tennis player Kaitlyn Zugay and Nevada boys track athlete Connor Kunze were voted the Ames Tribune's female and male Athletes of the Week for the week of April 1-7 by Tribune readers.
Zugay was voted female Athlete of the Week with 53% of the vote. Nevada girls soccer player Mya Spykerman came in second with 36%.
Zugay helped the Ballard girls tennis team sweep Clarke (6-3) and Audubon (9-0) at the Dallas Center-Grimes quad meet Friday at the Oak View courts in Grimes.
Zugay defeated Clarke's Madisyn McCoy by an 8-6 score in the No. 1 singles match, and she joined up with Adi Zeigler to win the No. 2 doubles match over Maisy McCoy and Marissa Bakley by an 8-6 score. In the win over Audubon, Zugay blanked the Wheelers' Grace Zaiger by an 8-0 score in singles play, and she and Zeigler downed Lauren Greving and Kaleal Haas by an 8-1 score in the No. 2 doubles match.
Kunze won male Athlete of the Week with 88% of the vote. Ames boys tennis player Anson Bernard took second with 10%.
Kunze won both the 100 and 200-meter dash events and the long jump at the Nevada Co-Ed Invitational track and field meet on April 4.
Kunze took first in the 100 with a time of 11.10 seconds, and he won the 200 in 22.61. Kunze's winning jump in the long jump was 21 feet even.
