Julio Jones signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Coming soon to the NFC South: A new receiver for Tom Brady. Veteran wide receiver Julio Jones is signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the seven-time Pro Bowl wideout is signing a one-year deal with the Buccaneers to catch passes from Brady:

Jones appeared in ten games for the Tennessee Titans last season, catching 31 passes for 434 yards and a touchdown. That was after Jones spent ten seasons in the NFC South with the Atlanta Falcons, during which he caught 848 passes for 12,896 yards and 60 touchdowns.

Jones has dealt with hamstring injuries the past two seasons, which has limited his effectiveness. During this past year, he showed glimpses of his previous self, on plays like this one against the Seattle Seahawks:

Jones runs a deep post route and Ryan Tannehill, working off of play-action, finds him behind the coverage.

Here against the Indianapolis Colts, Jones finds a soft spot in the zone coverage and makes a tough adjustment to the throw for the reception:

With Chris Godwin returning from season-ending knee surgery, there is a chance that Jones can help the Buccaneers’ passing game in the short-term. Whether he can avoid the lower-body injuries that have hampered him the past two seasons is perhaps the biggest question.
