What Josh Heupel said about Bru McCoy injury in Tennessee football vs South Carolina

Tennessee tight end Jacob Warren (87) kneels beside Bru McCoy (15) as he lays injured on the field during a football game between Tennessee and South Carolina at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023.

Josh Heupel didn't have an update on Bru McCoy's injury in Tennessee football's win against South Carolina on Saturday, but expected one in the coming 48 hours.

“I hate what happened to Bru," Heupel said. "We will have more of an update tomorrow or Monday. Everybody saw it was a lower-body injury that didn’t look good. There is nobody better than him.”

McCoy suffered a lower-body injury in the second quarter and was carted off the field. He was taken to UT Medical Center with his family, according to the ESPN broadcast.

The No. 19 Vols (4-1, 1-1 SEC) beat the Gamecocks (2-3, 1-2) 41-20 at Neyland Stadium before going into an open week.

McCoy caught a Joe Milton pass and fought for 17 yards before he was wrestled down by two South Carolina defenders. McCoy's right leg twisted as he was tackled and he remained down on the field.

South Carolina's training staff rushed to McCoy, while tight end Jacob Warren kneeled down next to his fellow Vols senior. The Vols medical team scrambled to McCoy as well before a cart was brought onto the field.

McCoy has 17 catches for 217 yards and a touchdown this season. He is in his second season with the Vols after transferring from USC.
