Josh Heupel details Nico Iamaleava’s ability ahead of 2023 season

Tennessee practiced for the 15th time fall training camp on Monday in preparation for the 2023 season.

The Vols will open its 2023 campaign on Sept. 2 versus Virginia at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee (noon EDT, ABC).

Third-year head coach Josh Heupel met with media following practice and discussed freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s ability as a backup.

“I think he’s ready to play at a really high level,” Heupel said. “All the young quarterbacks, it’s different when you get out there, it’s live bullets and you don’t have a red jersey on. Feel really good about where he’s at. Command of our offense, being a really sound decision maker, fundamentally being able to get himself in a good position to be consistently accurate with the ball. I like what he’s done.”

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Iamaleava came to Tennessee from Warren High School in Downey, California.
