Jonesville baseball and softball teams display dominant pitching in sweeps of Addison

JONESVILLE — Jonesville baseball and softball continues to display their pitching talent on the mound and in the circle this season. That pitching dominance has been key for both teams in their transitions to the Cascades Conference this Spring. Their bullpen continued their success on Monday when Jonesville swept the Addison Panthers in two doubleheader matchups.

Jonesville baseball defeated their league rivals 11-2 and 13-3, a marked improvement and strong start to the week after losing two-of-three to the Hanover-Horton Comets to in the final week of April.

The Jonesville softball team defeated Addison 15-6 and 14-3. The Comets lost two doubleheaders back-to-back to end April and to start May, so their two dominating wins over the Panthers is an impressive rebound for a team looking to get back to better than .500 overall on the year.

For Jonesville softball, senior Lyra Nichols got the win in game one, pitching all seven innings, striking out 18 and giving up just two earned runs. Game two was won by Bryn Rusk, pitching all seven and striking out 10 whilst giving up just one earned run.

Comet baseball was led by senior Micah Calligan on the mound in game one, earning the win with a seven-inning effort. Calligan struck out eight and gave up two earned runs. Senior Wade Sommers got the win in game two, pitching four innings, striking out five and giving up just one earned run. Carson Young relief pitched through one inning to end the game.

Traditionally, both Nichols and Rusk contribute standout efforts in the circle and at the plate for Jonesville softball, and they did that again against Addison. Nichols had a total of six hits, five RBIs and six runs through two games. Nichols had three total doubles and added her seventh homer of the season in game two. Rusk had four hits, two RBIs and five runs through two games, including two doubles.

They weren't the only standouts for the Comet softball team. Elena Prater had a double, a triple, four total hits, two RBIs and five runs. Ava Kramer had three total hits, two RBIs and three runs. Megan Hewlett had three total hits, two RBIs and two runs. Also earning doubles in game two were Gracen Hager, Jayda Rathbun and Keileigh Palmer. Rathbun had three hits, three RBIs and two runs in game two.

The pitchers for Jonesville baseball also had big days at-bat. Wade Sommers had two total hits, two RBIs and one run. Sommers had one triple and one double. Calligan had five runs and two total hits, including a double.

Connor VanBuskirk had three doubles, three total hits, five RBIs and three runs. AJ Bowers had five total hits, five RBIs and six runs. Bowers had one double. Junior ace pitcher Drew Bradley did not pitch but had two runs, three total hits and four RBIs. Bradley had a double. Damon Newell had three hits and two runs in game one. Carson Cornila had two hits, one double, one RBI and two runs in game two.

The two teams will have games against East Jackson on Wednesday on the road. It'll be there first league games against the Trojans since transitioning to Cascades sports. It should be another two-game sweep for Jonesville's baseball and softball teams. Fans can expect Nichols and Rusk to get more innings on Wednesday for Comet softball. Drew Bradley should get a start for Comet baseball. Bradley and Nichols will have equal opportunities for season-best pitching efforts.
