Johni Broome explains viral moment he shared with Morgan Freeman in Saturday’s win at Ole Miss

Johni Broome had an amazing second-half performance in No. 16 Auburn’s win over Ole Miss on Saturday.

Broome went 7-of-9 from the field en route to a 15-point second-half effort which also saw him pull down five rebounds, assist two buckets, and block two shots. However, maybe the most memorable moment of the second half for Broome was his encounter with beloved actor Morgan Freeman.

Freeman, a native of Shelby, Mississippi, and an avid Ole Miss fan was sitting courtside at The Pavilion for the Rebels’ game against Auburn. Late in the second half, Broome tried to save the basketball from going out of bounds, which caused him to lose balance. Two fans grabbed him in hopes of helping him find his footing. Thinking it was a casual Ole Miss fan trying to hold on to him, Broome swatted the hand of one of the fans only to learn that it was Freeman.

“I thought it was an Ole Miss fan like just grabbing my jersey, like holding onto me,” Broome said Saturday. “I kind of just got the hand off. But I saw who it was, and like I’m a big movie guy. I probably watched one of his movies on the plane coming here.”

Broome quickly apologized to Freeman, even doing so again during an ensuing timeout. Broome said Freeman told him to “You are all good, just keep playing.”
