John Volpe is joining Rutgers baseball

Rutgers baseball has been busy this offseason, rebuilding via the transfer portal. The latest addition comes in-state from John Volpe, who spent the previous three seasons at Rider.

The versatile Volpe is a nice addition to the Scarlet Knights, capable of playing second base, shortstop and even in the outfield. He also gets it done in the classroom: the past two seasons, he made the MAAC All-Academic Team.

Volpe, who played his high school baseball at Wall High School (Sea Girt, N.J.), is coming off a strong 2022 season at Rider where he hit .281 in 54 games, all starts.

Rutgers went 33-23 (14-10 Big Ten) last season and is looking to return to the discussion for the NCAA Tournament.

The commitment to Rutgers from Volpe came on Monday afternoon:

Last season, Volpe led Rider in batting average. Hitting primarily as their leadoff hitter, he had 41 runs and 24 RBIs. He was also second on the team with 18 multi-hit games.
